How does the tire pressure warning work?

Featured Replies

Hi Briskoda users

I have a 2012 Octiavia Mk II. I was wondering how the tire pressure measurement/warning work? Does it actually measure the pressure in the tires or does it somehow measure differences in rotation of the tires and gives a warning if the difference is too big?
Someone who knows?

The MK2 Octavia was only offered with indirect TPMS from factory, it uses the ABS sensors to measure the wheel rotation as per this page: https://www.my-gti.com/321/volkswagen-tyre-pressure-monitoring-system-tpms

It is possible to retrofit direct TPMS which uses proper pressure sensors and will show each tyres pressure on the maxidot :)

It uses the abs sensors to measure the speed of each wheel. If there is a big enough difference between them it will throw the warning light.

Hi
Thank you guys! That's what I suspected.
I think today, wet, sticky snow that was sticked to one or more tires made the alarm go off.

Was this feature on all MK2's or only after a certain build date?

@J.R. Not sure when it became standard as it's a function of the ABS pump.

Assuming your pump does support it, it'll just be VCDS coding to activate it but I'd also suggest adding the "Set" button. It makes resetting it after changing tyres or checking air pressures much easier.

Thanks for that, which controller would it be? I think that there was one for brakes so I will have a look.

I presume a set button is just a N/O contact to be wired across 2 pins on the controller?

I will also have a look in the owners manual.

how this should be performed  "SET"  as no button in center console?

The BJ pump/controller type seems to support indirect TPMS functionality thought....still not yet tested it to activate via VCDS.

Can "SET" button now be installed ?

BJ rev should support indirect TPMS.

If the cluster is new enough and a maxidot, you can reset through the menus. If it's older or not a maxidot, you'll need VCDS to reset it. More info here: http://www.forum.skoda-club.ru/viewtopic.php?f=99&t=106491

Otherwise, the button it pretty easy to fit, I think the part number is 1ZD927127 and most come with wiring looms although I can't recall the exact pin on the ABS module it connects to.

Yes the cluster is new  (car manuf. 11/2009) which had the new clusters installed since earlier that year and is maxidot.

So button is usueless i think in this circumstance .

I have a suspicion that direct TPMS (with sensors installed in each wheel rim)  is more  reliable than indirect..

What's your opinion?

I have both direct and indirect systems as they are happy to work together.

When I did have a puncture, the indirect system warned first and then direct system warned a minute later as the pressure decreased. The direct system allowed me to monitor the pressure loss so rather than immediately puling over, I found a car park where I could safely change the tyre.

Others have had different experiences with the indirect system so it's useful but not a replacement for checking tyre pressures (either manually or by direct TPMS).

Well in the maxidot menu haven't seen any option for resetting (set) the values (as the set button would do).

Do I need to activate anything more in the VCDS so that manage it?

I have enabled TPMS (PR-7K6) only function in the 03 ABS controller list.

I remember i have seen the TPMS options in other controllers but didn't play with them.

For example in the instruments module (17) and in the central electronics module (19) ...

Somewhere I've seen TPMS I and TPMS II in an option list....

From memory you need to change 03, 17 and 19. Check the link I posted above...?

I have the ...843 F instruments module - with this it is not supported to show the TPMS menu in the maxidot.

It keeps in memory  ( from installation list)  the 4C  (Tire Pressure II)  but in the long coding it only shows 0C and not change it to 4C.

Then the certain solution will be to fit the "SET" button better.

Do you have the 17 module  upgraded?

I don't think the 843 F can be updated without hardware modifications as the EEPROM is too small.

The SET button will work regardless of instrument cluster :)

Ok !

But will SET button upon installed recall back the TPMS menu in maxidot? (Talking about always for the indirect system)

Or just pressing it resets the system and still no optical menu in event of air loss to show to which tyre via ABS wheel sensor?
