Rapid spaceback intermittent flat battery and non start.

Featured Replies

Anyone had a problem with their battery going flat after a short journey and starting first time with a jumpstart. This has happened to me twice now within two weeks but drove fine during the period. There are no signs when starting off but after leaving it outside the destination (usually within a mile) and returning it won't start and gives a flat battery symptom.

You say flat battery symptom, have you had it tested?

First off make sure the terminals are nice and tight. My getting on for 5 yr old Toledo was throwing codes up earlier this year, it ended up having a new battery fitted as it wasn't deemed good enough, mine has stop/start though so a strong battery needed than normal. Also mine was never a non starter,  just threw codes up and the EPC and traction control lights.

Second that.

When you put the jump leads on you don't need the tight connection on the terminals as you are using another power source.

Make sure they are clean and dry or some battery terminal grease only.

Hi guys, the terminals are right and battery has been tested. It showed that there was 12.5 volts in it but my mate who tested it said to put it on a trickle charge for a couple of days to boost it. The problem raised its head a couple of weeks after its service when I drove it about a mile to my sons, left it on the path for about 45mins and came to drive home and bingo it wouldn't start. After putting it on a booster for one minute it was good as new and has been until today when it did the same only this time at the local shop. A quick jump start and good as new again?? Maybe a bad cell on the battery or a dead spot on the electrics??

Very strange problem and it needs to have all the test stuff there when it happens as there are no warning lights on the dash and starts great on the outbound journey but I ain't gotta clue as to why after such an intermittent short journey it throws its hand in.

With a bad cell you loose a sixth of the voltage and the battery becomes no good.

12.5 volts is at the bottom end of a good battery.

What type of battery do you have ( AGM, EFB or normal wet ) and how old is it?

Do you do mainly short journeys?

Was it locked on the path or unlocked?

Thanks AG Falco

It's got to be battery or alternator then at fault. Test both and it should give the answer. My guess is the battery if more than 4 yrs old
