Interior and electronics upgrades

Featured Replies

Hey y'all.

I recently acquired a SKODA Octavia 2, facelift.

1.4 TSI with 122hp from 2010. Not even reached 100.000km yet.

1z5 - the 5d combi version.

In my previous car (a seat ibiza) I did a few upgrades myself.

I am kind of a luxury person, but without the funds to buy a car that has all the things I want from start.

I'd like to upgrade the following:
Car radio --> to an aftermarket android radio with navigation etc.

Steering wheel --> to one with function buttons

I have decent knowledge about the radio/navigation. I've been able to find a couple of different radios that fullfill my needs, and they're made for my specific car. So that won't be the issue.

The issue lies in the steering wheel.

For safety reason, I'd love an original SKODA steering wheel, with function buttons and airbag. However - I am unsure how to know if it fits, and whether the electronics will be a problem.

Current steering wheel has no controls.

I've been able to find a seller selling loads of steering wheels. For example

https://www.cars-equipment.com/en/shop/four-spoke-steering-wheels-11/oem-3t0419091ah-cwe-mfsw-for-skoda/#prettyPhoto

States it's OEM and it fits Skoda Octavia 2 + facelift (airbag exchange require)

Will there be any issues simply buying this product and attached it? Will it require wiring? Will it require some CANbus coding?

The physical installation won't be done by me, but by my mechanic dad. But he's unsure about wiring, coding etc.

So before I jump ahead and import a steering wheel from outside Denmark (where I live) I'd try to see if there's something I should know. Hence why I'm here. :-)

It's a bit messy post, but regarding that sort of stuff, I am a novice, and my dad only has replace steering wheels with an identical replacement one, on different car models.

So in short:
What should I know if I want to upgrade my original steering wheel, with (preferably) an OEM multifunction key steering wheel.

(supposedly the radio that I look at, should have the ability to programme the buttons to the functions I choose)

Thanks in advance

Kind regards from Denmark

Thomas

If car is not an elegance spec , then surely will need an upgraded steering wheel column controller, and maybe Can-Bus module upgrade.

do you have maxidot display in clusters ?

Of course will require much of coding to make everything working as should.

Navigating into this forum you can find lots of info and posts regarding.

have you considered the OEM Columbus infotainment ? it is much of higher quality than the Android based -chinese ones . Can be found easily on the net.

Get a VCDS autoscan or similar to check the steering controller.

It'll probably need replacing with a 'highline' that supports a MSFW. Be warned, there are three different styles of steering controller so you need to match the style that's fitted.

Once the steering controller supports a MFSW, it'll just be replacing the steering wheel and loom:

- If you stick with a MK2 FL style wheel, you can retain your airbag

- If you want a MK3 style as per your link, you'll need a new airbag
