Im confused.

Im interested in taking my advanced driving test. Does this have an impact on insurance?

Also, I have heard you get higher penalties if you are caught speeding etc- is this true?

I have been on the site and it seems alot more involved than i first thought.

Once paid up you get a letter and apparently there are meetings to attend locally. I've got to read up on it soon, I've got the book & letter so far :)

Usually an advanced drivers day to attend prior to taking your test, also local "social" evenings with speakers from the motoring industry. The last Gloucester one had a chap from Thatcham speaking about car security etc.

AFAIK attendance to either is not compulsory, although the Advanced Drivers Day is well worth it and lets you know that "you're not the only one" :D

1. Charity - so costs are lower

Well worth it , IMHO just to improve your awareness.

I took mine years ago just never renewed the subscription. In the last few years my workplace has put approx 150 drivers through the PCV advanced driving test and just that has been percieved to reduce the annual accident cost by around

I technicianed a RoSPA conference at Blackpool in february. Although I was behind the set I learned quite a lot from it, and my driving has improved slightly I think.

Well worth looking into, as there are a lot of drivers out there with poor attitudes as I learned by watching some of the videos at the conference.

One of our drivers had an accident last week which put two people in hospital, wrote a 12 month old Clio off and caused

If you're under 25 (or is it 21?) its only

Do it I am a member of a local Group and have been for the past 10 years. You wont spend a better £85/ £75. Observers are really friendly and dont forget they are all volunteers as well as the IAM and the assocaited groups are Charities.

Your driving will get better you will look further down the road for "hazards" and will adapt your driving syle to them.

It is not easy it is a challenge but one in which you will really enjoy. Your driving will become smoother you will drive in a more symthathetic nature and so will reduce running costs. Your passengers will notice an improvement.

Thats it, sales talk over, just do it, you will enjoy it so much!

SWMBO gave me a hard time about spending the cash on it, but she moans I drive too fast sometimes so seemed like a good idea to clue up again on the latest recommendations as well.

I'm the first to admit I do enjoy a bit of paced driving too when the conditions are right, but when I was on the M25 two nights ago with two lanes closed due to roadworks, and a speed limit of 40mph, I was scared. I was actually going a touch over 40 mph, say 43, and I feared for my life with cars screaming past at 80-90 mph (which was stupid having spotted several police vehicles that were pulling over speeders as well, btw). The two CLOSED lanes were in use by total idiots who don't comprehend the lane closed sign, workers in the road signs, and the workers who were putting out cones.

Further down the road was closed / diverted and a car + bus managed to drive straight past (even tho they had to swerve between the cones to do this  ) to then get shouted at & pulled over

Makes you wonder how they passed their tests IMHO

Lots of good advice guys, thanks...

really cheap cnsidering the cost of gaining a driving licensce these days...

It's really not a big commitment - I spent about 2hrs every fortnight on it and still haven't been to a group meeting. My insurance went down over £100 in the first year (though this coincided with me turning 25) and I am a much safer driver.

And you get boasting rights too

I was going to do this a while back but given I've just invested heavily in a new car I'm glad this has come up again.

I'm going to get myself signed up with my local group today.

Not done the IAM one :( However.....

Did the ROSPA one' date=' missed out on Gold due to slight over exuberance on an overtake so only got silver :(

Chris

Done that, damned good fun! :D

I went on a day long IAM course through work a few years back, I enjoyed it.

As someone who has paid attention to driving and read a fair bit, I did know much of what I was told -that's not to claim I am a fantastic driver- , but it was interesting to talk to someone who knew his stuff.
