Limp Home, Check Engine Light, Glow Plug Light

Featured Replies

Hi all

This afternoon my 2008 Superb II 2.0 TDI PD went into limp home mode with no warning, and a couple of minutes later the CEL and Glowplug lights came on and a 'Workshop' warning appeared.. Switched it off and on again, same thing happened.

I ran a scan with my OBDEleven, and got the code P0403 - EGR malfunction. Cleared the fault and it came back.

This is the first time Ive had an EGR issue on any car Ive owned, so I could do with some advice from you good people.

Im guessing the first thing I should do is take the EGR off and clean it, the engine has done 128000 miles so the valve is highly likely to be gunked up. But is there anything else I should be doing / checking before I get my spanners out?

The 2.0 TDI PD engine is the BMP engine code apparently, and it looks like the EGR is at the front of the engine and relatively easy to take off. Does anyone have experience of removing the EGR and / or can point me to an online guide for this specific engine? Any hints or tips to help me out?

Or, am I barking up the wrong tree? I know fault codes can sometimes be a bit misleading, so could it be something other than the EGR?

Any assistance will be very much appreciated, thanks in advance,

Adam

A scan with VCDS may provide more detailed information on the nature of the fault.

Most likely it's a problem with the valve not being able to move normally, resulting in reduced EGR flow and a fault code. If it's not difficult to remove the EGR assembly and clean it, it's not a bad place to start. Double check whether the EGR is water cooled though: you may need to have coolant on hand to replace any lost while removing it.

Ok, an update. Im now getting P0404 code which is another variant of the "EGR not working" issue.

And having removed the engine covers, it seems the EGR isnt at the front of the engine after all, and I cant for the life of me figure out where it is. Ive trawled the net for "2.0 TDI PD EGR" and "Skoda BMP engine EGR valve" but none of the pics or videos Ive found look like my engine. Can anyone tell me on the attached photo where my EGR valve is?

Thanks in advance

It's very probably buried at the back underneath the turbo/exhaust manifold.
