Intermittent headlight problem

Featured Replies

Hi, for the last six weeks I have had an intermittent problem with AFS.  The RH dipped light comes and goes as it feels like unfortunately it never feels like going when the car is in the dealers.  There ‘appears’ to be one causal circumstance, that’s when I back the car out of my drive (I know, I know don’t do it but my circumstances mean that is the only way to get my car onto the drive) with full RH down lock applied the light may or may not fail with the resultant AFS warning.  I know that intermittent electrical problems are a bitch (40 years as an aircraft eng in the RAF) so I’m hoping that there is prior experience of this problem out there.

Superb 111 18 plate

1.4 petrol SE exec estate

Approx 8,000 miles

in all other respects the car is “Superb”

Saw a VW issue where one owner said there was a nut missing from the light, dealer replaced it. Another issue was with a bulb needing replacement. Not sure if either are your issue but its a start.

Nice call mrgf I’ve just heard from the dealership, when they were taking the car into the workshop the AFS light came on and the bulb went out.  They transferred the bulb to the other side and the fault went with it.  Diagnosed duff bulb and everybody scratching their heads as to how a bulb can have an intermittent fault.  They ordered a replacement and according to the spares man there is ONE bulb in the UK, due in tomorrow, I’ve heard of ‘just in time’ but this is ridiculous.  I guess that you don’t just pop down to Halfords for a box of spare bulbs, I wonder how they manage in France, where you have to carry spares?

I also get an intermittent fault with the right hand side headlight. (happened about 6 times now)

Driving along, headlight doing their thing all fine, then ping "check right main beam" or "AFS Fault right headlight" (don't recall the exact wording)

Once the car is switched off and parked for a while. The next time starting, the faults will be cleared.

It'll be due its first service around March, so I'll ask them to check it then.

I had a bulb fail and it was replaced with a duff bulb that was intermittently going on and off. It took three trips to the dealer to diagnose. Be aware that xenon bulbs are replaceable under warranty and with me they replaced the other bulb as original was osram but now they are supplying Phillips.
