Hue and IKEA playing nicely

Featured Replies

Here's hoping there are some smart lighting fans on here.

I have a load of Phillips hue bulbs in use and just started adding IKEA tradfri bulbs to the mix. Got them working ok and setup on groups with the hue bulbs.

My question is regarding the IKEA dimmer. I have one linked to my bedside light but I should be able to link it to multiple lights and the ceiling light does indeed flash like it should when linking it. But then it still isn't controlled by the dimmer (the first one retains the link)

Any ideas?

Will try turning off more lights (at the mains) to prevent confusion within the system.

Hi Marky,

We have some Hue lights around the house too.

From memory, you first need to add a light (bulb) to a room, then add the bulbs to a scene, then add that scene to one of the button presses on the dimmer (assuming you mean one of the Hue remote switches), et voila...I think! All of this done through the app on your phone or tablet of course.

I think that’s it, but it was Mrs Cubbington who set it up mainly, creating routines, timers, etc., as I’ve not got the patience to dig into it that deeply :D

What I’m looking for is wall plugs that can be controlled by Hue, so that you can plug a normal light into...we’ve got an old converted video projector with cool filament bulbs and I want to add that to the Hue system too.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Nick

thanks @Cubbington.  The dimmer I am using is an ikea rotary dimmer in their tradfri range which is somewhat compatible with hue.  It's a more convenient dimmer for by the bed as it is a rotary one, less than half the price of hue dimmer and means I don't have to dig my phone out to turn the lights off after reading.  I have tried again to link up the ceiling light together with the my bedside light but it fails to retain the settings for some reason.  I am going to revert back to a long press setting on the remote to turn off the ceiling light individually.

For reference I am doing this with 'all4hue' app on android.  It is massively powerful but needs a bit of patience to fully understand.

I'd recommend to Mrs C that she tries it (iPhone versions exist) if you guys want to have more control over the dimmers.  For instance we have every dimmer in the house set to turn the room onto a medium setting with one touch of 'on' and then full brightness with a hold of 'on'.  So every dimmer works the same and you don't get blinded if turning lights on.  Another good one is the lights to lowest setting with a hold of 'dim down'. sort of like a night light.

Hi @MarkyG82,

Thanks for the tips on the Ikea dimmers...they really are a hell of a lot cheaper than Hue, and they do power sockets and motion sensors.

We’ve got the wall-mounted dimmers in the living room, and you can program scenes into those, I guess in the same way as you can with Ikea, so I have the first press coming on at low level with a warm white...same as you, to avoid blinding

I can’t find the ‘all4hue’ app for iOS, and we just use Philips’ own app, which works well, but is a little cronky.

The lights also appear on our Logitech Harmony remote in the living room, and I’d like to see the scenes, but have only ever been able to see the bulbs; it’d be nice to program a macro to watch a movie late at night and have the lights dimming to a low level...I’ll figure it out at some point I’m sure.

Nice to speak to someone else using different components, so some food for thought, thanks.

My brother in law found the equivalent app.  I'll ask him what it is when I get a chance.  Really is worth the effort as you are not limited to using scenes and you can program any of the buttons to do things.

We also have a harmony remote.  A bit more limiting in that it can only turn on/off and dim but still great to have.  Do you know if the ikea plugs can be controlled by the either harmony or one of the many hue apps

Thanks @MarkyG82, would be nice to try an alternative app!

I’ve not tried the Ikea plugs, as I only saw them when I searched for Tradfri on their website, so don’t know if they will work, but cheap enough tor try, and if they don’t work, just take ‘em back.

I’m not in an urgent rush to get them, but when I do, I’ll let you know either way.

Glad it’s not just me not finding the scene settings on the Harmony, and it is just basic control.

Cheers,

Nick
