1.5tsi with manual box problems?

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm currently in the market for a new Superb mkIII but I've heard some stories about the 1.5tsi married to a manual gearbox suffering from kangarooing when setting off in 1st / 2nd gear. Does anyone have the above combination or have any comments or personal opinions on this pairing.

    Thanks.

Have a look HERE (the 'big' thread resides in the Karoq forums because the Karoq was the first Skoda to get the 1.5)

That being said, I'm waiting on the delivery of my new S3 1.5TSI with DSG. My advice would be to testdrive a car (ask that it's 'cold'!) and see if the problem manifests itself.

Word on the Dutch forum skodaforum.nl is Skoda NL is aware of the problem and they expect a softwarefix in Q1 2019...if that's just dealertalk to get the annoying customer to go away, of if it's really in the works, time will tell...

Drove my car and another VAG product (Golf 7.5) with the exact combo of 1.5+DSG and couldn't replicate the issue.

Thanks Too Tall, Test drove a Kodiaq (superb not available) with the 1.5 manual combination this morning at my local dealers (-2 degrees and iced up) so plenty cold enough.

There is a hesitation there in 1st and a pause in 2nd before the engine picks up, but if you rev it to about 1800rpm it seems ok, or just release the clutch (no throttle input) and let the idle speed get you going and this method seems OK. Its not ideal but I think it is manageable although I'm testing a dsg version next and if that seems better I will probably end up with that.

Well it seems VW have put there hands up and acknowledged there's a fault with the 1.5 engine, and I don't really want to go down the diesel road either. May have to look for a 1.4 option if the price is right, any opinions from owners of this engine as whether to go for a dsg or manual?

     Thanks.

Really?  What’s the news?

I’m awaiting my new lease car - 1.5 DSG - due on Brexit day!

There's a page on Honest John about it, VW are now saying it's no longer a characteristic and it's more of a "small problem" there's a hesitation and loss of power (possibly dangerous if pulling out of a busy junction) in first gear and when going into second gear, it's more previlant on the manual gearbox apparently but some people are reporting it on the dsg aswell. There's supposed to be a software fix coming in the next few months!

It's stopped me buying the 1.5tsi at the moment, and we don't really want a diesel so we are in limbo and waiting for a definite fix before committing to a purchase.

It may be worth speaking to your dealer about the issue, I would definitely give it a good examination upon receipt and make sure your happy with it before driving off.

all.

i will be picking up my sportline plus 1.5tsi manual (company car) march 18th .i did make concerns clear about this problem to the Skoda dealership and they told me their will be no problems with the car and i would be happy with it.

lets wait and see .

They are in the business of selling, what else would they say?!

Risky promise by the dealer. Either they are genuinely not aware of it or they are hoping it won't clash with your driving style.

To be fair, *my* dealer only sold two 1.5 TSi manuals in November and the other chap hadn't raised any problems by the time I took my car back in, so I think that, at that time, my dealer *was* genuinely not aware of the issue.  Given that most purchases are still (a) diesel and (b) DSG, it may have been a bit slow filtering through (just like the fuel, pun intended!).

Maybe it just needs the Audi throttle response settings, daughter has a manual A3 with the 1.5 an she hasn't complained in just over a year.

I suspect that rewriting the software is a doddle; I suspect that rewriting the software without messing up fuel economy, emissions, WLTP approvals and all the rest is a bit more of a challenge ...

Hi all. Just acquired my Sokda Superb Sportline 1.5 TSI 150 manual gearbox, manufactured mid December 2018. I wanted to give a quick feedback about this engine.
The car runs very smothly, no kangorooing at all, no dying. Still in running-in but just drove 200km mostly in highway and wow I am so impressed by the car. It is so quiet and drives almost like a diesel but much more quiet and more revs.
