Tramlining - Superb 280 4x4 quirk or tyre characteristic?

Featured Replies

My Superb 280 4x4 Estate seems to intermittently tramline / squirm. It otherwise drives perfectly straight, being only 4 months old and shod with standard fit Bridgestone Potenza 235/40R19. I know powerful FWD can exhibit torque steer but this shouldn’t happen in a 4x4.

Anyone experience this? Many thanks.

My sportline on 19inch wheels and pirellis doesn't seem to do that. Don't even feel torque steer. Mines a 66plate though, and bought used with just under 16k miles now.

Thanks Kete. Maybe I should take it to the dealers to check for damage although it is not constant and unrelated to road surfaces. It’s also unrelated to feeding in the power, as on steady throttle it could come in anytime.

Anyone recommend a preference between the Nottingham or the Leicester dealership as I live midway between the two?

@Teck   What tyre pressures do you run.

I would take it too the dealers to see what they say after a Master Techs road test and inspection and alignment check.

Then assuming nothing is found wrong i would go get a 4 wheel alignment check and the adjustment that is likely required done by a professional with the gear and more than an idea and a guess,

then take your Invoice to the Dealership for them to pay your expense or for them to claim from Skoda UK.

Thank you Skoffski, that’s very useful advice. I will try to get out to them tomorrow.

Otherwise, it’s a fine car.

Just an afterthought.   Obviously never ever happens, well sometimes it does!

The Transport Blocks are not still on the car are they?

I had a cursory look, admittedly at the offside wheel while on the road and not the ramp. Many thanks again.

The car has to be jacked up a bit to let the suspension sag before you can really see the transport blocks if there.

Not unknown for one side to be left in either.

You can only give an alignment bill to Skoda if it found to be out of spec.

My mk2 octavia was out on the rear wheels and caused excessive wear before I found out. :(

Thank you Gerry. I am really touched by the great community spirit! This is a really helpful and supportive forum.

With your advice and earlier ones from other members, I can’t wait to take the car in to the nearer dealership tomorrow. Hope I can find a gap in my work schedule!

(Add a pic?)

Phone the dealer. If it’s only 4 months old then you’re likely still in the ‘snagging period’ wherein a dealer should investigate and rectify things they can (and do) later class as wear and tear.

The alignment was out out on my first Sportline. I was more miffed that it wasn’t detected on PDI as it was obvious to me in the first 1-2 miles. Anyway...dealer sorted it for free.

Thank you Penguin, all kind friends who wrote with advice. I have been booked in for technician’s test on Monday.

Will keep all posted. Thanks again.

Just to add m6 2p. Had my car nearly 40 months now and never experienced this. Looking forward to hear what they say.

Thank you Nick.

Today, I suspected it could be the Lane Assist and when I switched it off, it seemed a lot better. I spoke with the very experienced salesman who sold me the car and he also said it is probably an overly keen Lane Assist system.

I am still keeping my appointment with the Skoda dealership road tester on Monday.

On my Octavia 230 you can alter the Lane Assist settings. I Don't know if your is the same but in the settings under Drivers Aids ( I think ) there are 2 boxes you can tick I only have the top box ticked and I find the LA is less aggressive than having both boxes ticked.

Thanks Auric, I think with feedback from you and other forum members, I could be getting nearer to the cause of the problem.

The selection menu for driver techno assistance in my car lives on-screen. ForbLane Assist, it’s tick or untick; no variation.

Is this just on the Maxidot screen ?  ( between the dials on the dash )

The boxes I'm talking about are in the Car settings on the Radio under Settings/Driver assistants/Drivers Aids ( I think. )

On my Maxidot screen I only have off/on
