What's a the likelihood of Skoda offering goodwill towards engine replacement due to timing chain failure?

Featured Replies

Hi all

The engine of my Skoda Fabia 2010 1.2 DSG petrol has died because of timing chain failure, I only had it for around 15 months and it's done only 57k miles! I know that some people have been able to receive goodwill from Skoda towards repairing this problem, I'm just wondering if you think Skoda would do the same for me considering that the car is 9yo now? The car has full Skoda servicing history, and it's in a good condition, I bought it because of the low milage and the good things I had heard about Skoda. I've spoken to them on the phone and they don't provide a straight yes/no answer, it's going to cost me around £150 to take the car to the Skoda centre, and I'd like to avoid spending anymore on top of the £400 that I've spent so far on this problem...

Bad luck googlefast..

regrettably I think you have  zero chance indeed of getting any help from Skoda on this one. As you indicated the car is now 9 years old.

I would have thought that there was some prior indication of imminent failure?  There have been two chain/sprocket mods on the 1.2 - but I do not think that cars were recalled for mods (?)

Did you not pick up a noisy chain sound recently?  Even if (unlikely) they do make you some sort of offer, you will still be confronted by a hefty bill.

Who diagnosed the problem as chain?

Sorry to be the bearer of negative news on this one.

Do let us know how this pans out.

I didn't notice any difference in the car until the chain failure, no strange noises or anything. Having considered the prices for fixing the car, mostly between £1500-£2500, I have decided to sell it as scrap and buy another car, this was my first car and I can't help but feel disappointed by quality of the engine in this Skoda Fabia which I bought under the impression that it would be decent car due being part of VW group. That was a grave mistake on my side. My original plan was to take this car to Skoda for a part exchange maybe in one year time and buy a Yeti, but now I don't think I'll ever be confident in purchasing a Skoda!
