Ventilation Fan Failed, now Fixed.

Featured Replies

Was out in the car on Monday, fan worked fine from the start, just a short journey.

On the return journey I noticed the fan had stopped working as the windows had started to mist up.

Everything looked normal with the Climatronic, all the buttons & lights worked as they should.

Messed with all the temperature & speed settings, no change.

It was dark when I got home, so left it expecting it to just be a blown fuse.

Went out to look at it this morning, fuses all ok.

Surmised it would probably be the fan motor, so removed the flimsey cover in the passenger footwell under the glove box & found a brown multi plug with 4 wires attached to the motor casing.

Pulled it off, there were 2 thick wires which I assumed were the power wires & 2 thin wires which must be the control wires for the fan speed.

Measured 12v on the thick wires with my meter, all ok.

This brown plug plugs into a control module attached to the motor casing, at the other end of the module is another connector with just 2 wires, black & red, these dissapear into the motor casing.

I tested the voltage here & still had 12v, so decided the motor had to come out.

Pulled up the little plastic tab at side casing side which, being so cold, promptly broke off.

Twisted the motor casing & the whole assembly dropped down, a bit of manouvering & it was out, such an easy job.

Took it into the garage & tested the black/ red wires going into the motor, about 1 ohm which I thought would be about right.

So attached it to a 12v battery charger & it promptly spun up ok, took about 4 amps.

Took it back to the car & temporarily plugged it back in & again it worked ok.

The fan rotor seemed to have a bit more friction than I thought it should, so decided to give it a bit of an overhaul.

In a previous thread someone had mentioned that water can collect at the bottom bearing on the motor, held in by the plastic casing.

There was no sign of water in mine but I decided to drill a 3mm hole in the plastic case so it would drain out if any found it's way in later.

The hole also allows you to get some lubricant into the bottom motor bearing with some thin spray grease.

Lubed the top bearing as well & cleaned the fan blades which were very dirty.

Sprayed some contact cleaner into each brush holder in case they were sticking.

The fan now rotated with much less friction than before.

Put it all back into the car, seemed a good tight fit so dont think the broken locating tab will be a problem.

All working again & don't really know what exactly was wrong in the first place, but suspect it was probably a stuck motor brush which came unstuck when I removed the motor.

But a nice easy job to do which makes a change.

Time will tell if it lasts!

To "PipH" - Thanks for this "How to.." :) I hope everything will be OK with your "Superb" :)
