Loud hum

Featured Replies

Hi, got a question.

since I have had my second fabia it has had a loud hum which sounds like it’s coming from the passengers side front

iv had the passengers side front wheel bearing replaced and also tried different tyres so that eliminates those 2 possible causes but I’m now at a standstill at what it could be, any ideas?

Cheers

Forgot to also mention the noise goes away on left turns but is there going straight and gets worse on right hand turns. Get louder as you get faster

Is the noise still there if you put it in neutral and let it coast?

Left front wheel bearing. I know you said you've had it replaced but it's gone again. Was it a decent brand bearing?

It's possible that the bearing wasn't fitted in the correct manner causing it to fail. They are Gen 2 bearings and must never be pressed in by the hub flange part of the bearing. It needs a special tool to press them in by the outer shell.

It might also be possible that the noise is coming from the back and just sounds like it's the front. So needs checking out.

Was done usIng proper gen 2 tool as I did it myself, there isn’t a change in tone whatsoever from the old bearing

OK, maybe it's coming from the rear then?

Quite possibly but ultimately sounds like it’s coming from the front, passenger also says it vibrates in the footwell quite

Badly

Hmmm, that's odd. I can only think that it's the new bearing as the noise you describe, especially the change of noise when you change direction, is classic wheel bearing symptoms.

I was thinking the same but it instantly sounded like a badly gone wheel bearing (exact same noise as before I changed it)  from the moment I drove it again, no noise change from the 2 bearings at all

Worth jacking the rear up and spinning the wheels to see if it sounds rough. If it's not that then it can only be the front. Jack the front up and see if you can detect any roughness or play.

Already checked mate, checked for play front and rear and felt by jacking up and having wheels spinning and feeling shocks, nothing

Very odd. I'm out of ideas then :shake:

I had a front near side wheel bearing humming really loud at 50mph, did it for 10,000 miles before I replaced it, and even the day I replaced it there was NO detectable play in the jacked up wheel when trying to rock it top to bottom.

What brand was the wheel bearing you fitted? Sometimes they can be duff from day one.

Did you also spin wheel when jacked up with steering to left and right - outer CV joint is where I am heading. Unsure where you jacked from but if from sills, try from track control arm as this will put driveshafts/CV joint in true running position. Also did you try backing the brake pads off the disc to ensure these are not working as a steady.

Checked the new bearing and still spins free and silent, ordered another to do the opposite side tho so hopefully that will sort it. Going to try a new driveshaft on passengers side too as done one on drivers side and had made no differences. Failing that I have no clue what it may be

Spun wheels left and right jacked up but not jacked up from the arm to get true driving position so may give that a go tomorrow! Thanks for the idea. How do you mean about the brake pads?

I doubt it would be the CV joint or driveshaft as they don't make humming noises. Knackered CV joints usually click or knock.

Just suggesting that pads are pushed back in calipers, away from discs or remove calipers completelly to ensure that they do not apply any force into the discs that could hide problems while manually spun - remember that the bearing will see no real loading during testing on a jack. While you have checked bearing, noise when cornering either left or right appears because the bearing is seeing axial loads rather than just radial loads when travelling in a straight line.

I think it's the new bearing for whatever reason. If the humming noise goes away on left turns the problem is on the passenger side.

Iv been told about the possibility of a bent driveshaft as I spoke to someone and he had the same issue as me and same noise, changed wheel bearing, made no noise but he changed the driveshaft as it was slightly bent and it sorted it

Iv ordered the drivers side wheel bearing to see if that makes any difference at all, won’t hurt to do it as I have replaced the opposite side, going to change passenger side driveshaft as also changed drivers side. If nothing will look into doing brakes as the passengers side caliper is holding pads a little tight to the disk, if the issue still continues iv been told from a Volkswagen technician the problem may lay in the gearbox, possibly diff bearings

I guess it's always a possibility. That would explain the vibrations you described. Not sure it would make a humming noise but I could be wrong. Be interesting to see how it is after you do those jobs.

Finally sorted it today! Fitted drivers side wheel bearing and also had a stuck slider for the caliper. Soon as I took the car a test drive the noise had gone completely!
