First gear problems

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a Superb 1.6 Diesel 120 hp.  Sometimes when I stop it can be hard to put the gear lever in to first gear. The gearbox won't allow me to push the lever into gear. There is strong resistance from the box. I have to force the lever in to gear. It feels like the bushings are the problem, but i'm not so sure. Could it be a synchro out of place or a clutch problem? Anybody else come across this problem?  Sometimes it can happen in 5th gear also. I usually have to do a double clutch to get it into gear.

Thanks in advance....

I’d check the clutch first - how much pedal travel you have before disengaging? Might just need some adjustment if it is a bit worn and starts slipping high up. If it is all right with the clutch then synchro rings might me the culprit. What is the mileage of you car? (If double clutching helps that would be synchro for sure, but it can’t be verified without taking the gearbox apart...) That’s my 0.02 :blush
