RCD 330 or better alternatives ?

Featured Replies

Do yo like the RCD 330 ? I think i have found out that i should go for the noname version (not dessay), with android auto and mirrorlink? I think they call it the "B" version.

Then i will use google maps as navigation correct ? But what if in areas with no mobile signal ?

I like that the amundsen+ navigation voice just talks over the music being played, does the RCD 330 the same ?

And it is correct that the RCD will not display any climatronic information ?

Does the RCD 330 have the same measurements as the amundsen+ ?

is it always google maps used for navigation with android auto, or could i use a garmin navigation app on the phone ? Or would i then have to do it by mirrorlink ?

Does the google assistant works through the RCD 330 in both android auto and mirrorlink mode ?

Is the mic on the fronpanel of the RCD 330 sufficient ? Or can i connect the existing original ceiling mic the amundsen unit uses ?

Is the sound quality as good as the amundsen ?

And final, What is your recomendation of headunits to skoda octavia 2011, when android auto and mirrorlink is liked ? Is android auto obsolete if it has mirrrorlink ? Or is the navigation and google assistant better integrated in android auto ?

Google maps will work without mobile signal if you use the 'offline maps' mode to download the correct sections of map before hand. You'll loose traffic info until you get signal back.

I believe so, I always have the instructions muted so I can't be sure.

Correct. Reversing sensors will show but not climatronic info.

Yes, the Amundsen, Amundsen+, Columbus and RCD330 are all the same size.

Android auto supports Google maps or Waze currently. Other apps might work via mirrorlink but I've never used it.

Certainly does via Android Auto, never used mirrorlink.

It's OK but not as good as the external mic. It doesn't support the external mic but some have cut the wires to the internal mic and soldered the external one instead.

Is the sound quality as good as the amundsen ?

That's very subjective, some are happy and others aren't.

Android auto is newer than mirrorlink, it's designed for car use and gives a cut down view to avoid confusion. Never used mirrorlink so I can't compare.

It'll depend on your usage...

I used to have a 'Skoda green light' Noname 6RD 035 187 B running SW:5606.

It's biggest issue for me was the FM radio. As it's designed for the Chinese market, the RDS support is rubbish so if you do long distance and rely on AF to change the frequencies, you'll end up with static much of the time. I had to put an SD card with music on it to avoid the FM static before connecting my phone. Never had any serious issues with Android Auto so if that's all you want, it's pretty good.

I found a few volume bugs too:

- max startup volume sometime happened between songs, so I had to turn it up above my normal listening levels.

- after using AA voice control, sometimes it would loose all bass, hitting the VC button twice sorted it

As a cheap AA headunit, it's not bad. If you want good FM, I'd probably avoid it...

Thank you for the detailed answer :)

I often listen to FM and enjoy the amundsen with RDS and AF.

But could'nt you (and i), with an RCD330 just use an internet radio app via mirrorlink ? Like tune-in, and if you have it installed  on your phone, then just use mirrorlink to bring the app on the RCD screen, and then listen to your radiostation over the internet ?

BR

Yes, you can probably use tune-in (or similar) assuming you've connected your phone and it has enough signal/data to stream.

The FM issue is just something to be aware of. It's down to you whether it's a deal breaker or not...
