First time diesel

Less than a mile for warm air is impressive - I'd be coming to 3 miles before I get much of a change.

@TheRobinK  Hot air in less than a mile likely because the setting on 'Recirculate'  & not set on 'auto'  when very cold,

and when there is Snow or Ice blocking the Air Vents under the windscreen even if snow brushed off.  Then when there is a feeling of heat or no blocked air intakes moved from 'Recirculate'.

Or heating down until ready to bother about it in the cabin other than onto the screen and side windows.

Leaving a cold diesel to issue to warm is not helpful to it. You need a few seconds to bring oil pressure up and then drive sensibly i.e. keep revs down until oil temp is above 70c.

Modern oils are very hardy and can take a lot of abuse but getting pressure up and stable is important.

A diesel needs load to generate heat due to its efficiency over gasoline. As someone else said, a idling engine is not under load and will create very little heat.

It's very different to gasoline which generates heat during the spark phase

That's interesting. Presumably an auxiliary heater, do you have any more info'?

Thanks Skoffski - I'll try that.  I've definitely been set on auto without recirculate to date.
