Advice please for Superb III L&K Winter Wheels and Tyres

Featured Replies

Hi there I am getting myself slightly lost with tyres and wheels!  I have read the winter tyre/wheel sticky but still slightly lost and am looking for advice.

I have a newish Skoda Superb III (2017) L&K.  I believe it is running 18" Pegasus alloys (8Jx18 ET44).

At least once a year, sometimes twice I drive to Switzerland for skiing.  Previously I have bought winter tyres but now with the new car I thought it would be better to buy wheel and tyre package to make it cheaper to fit etc; especially as I am happy to go for smaller cheaper wheels as it's just for a few weeks a year.

So my question is:

1. Would you agree with getting a wheel/tyre package rather than just tyres?

2. Could anyone recommend a package that would fit.  I went to mrwinterwheels.co.uk and found Kronprinz 16" SKODA SUPERB (3T) STEEL WINTER WHEELS with 250/60 R16 Duraturn Mozzo Winter 99V tyres all in for £370 which seemed pretty good.  However on willtheyfit it didn't seem to match up perfectly:

EXISTING   NEW
Diameter 668.7mm 664.4mm
Circumference 2100.8mm 2087.3mm
Poke 57.6mm 41.6mm
Inset 145.6mm 123.6mm
Speedo error 0% 0.65%
Reading at 30mph 30mph 30.19mph
Reading at 60mph 60mph 60.39mph
Ride height gain 0mm -2.15mm
Arch gap loss 0mm -2.15mm

So I am getting really confused!
Any help really appreciated.

Thanks.

PS  (Apologies if this should be in tyres forum or super forum)  Let me know and I can move it.

These might help .. give information about sizes that fit cars, and impact on speedo. I would also check the manufacturer's website, look at other size wheels fitted across the model range. If your car has a spare, consider that size too.

Just one word of warning, if the brake callipers vary in size across the model range make sure the wheels your select are not too small (sorry, it's not an easy one for me to advise, but I do know may be relevant consideration)

See this thread.

I went for audi 17" wheels see:

Having lived overseas and doing the 2 sets things it was a straightforward decision for me.

The ones i bought are not exact but.......

If you need them now you may not get the best price but if you can wait then prices will  I am sure be lower as spring and summer comes around.

If you have room to store the wheels and can change them over yourself then IMO it’s the best way to do it.

If you can’t do any of the above then I would run winter tyres all year round.

Look on eBay or on here, there are usually loads of s/h 5x112 PCD used alloys for sale, often for less than what you can buy new steel wheels for.

  • NEVER skimp on tyres they are literally the ONLY thing you have in contact with the road... this doesn’t mean you have to go with expensive premium tyres, but check the reviews first, i’m now on my 5th set of Nokian winter tyres (I have tried others as well) and I can’t see me changing brands anytime soon.
  • If you do go for non genuine VAG wheels (steel or alloy) then make sure they are radius seats otherwise you will need new bolts as well.
  • I assume the 250/60 R16 was a typo for 205/60 R16? if so the discrepancy is because the MK3 Superb uses 215/60 R16 (95V)

The ‘V’ speed rating can legally be lowered for winter tyres, the ’95’ load index however cannot (but it can be higher)

Finally what engine do you have? the 2.0 diesel is fine with 16” wheels, the 2.0 petrol however needs a minimum of 17”.

Thanks @Bud and @Smileyman for your help.

@Gizmo : You're right it was a typo for "215/60 R16 99V" HOWEVER it is a 2.0 petrol (SUPERB ESTATE 2.0 TSI Laurin & Klement 5dr DSG).  So I guess Mr.Winterwheels is wrong in its suggestions.  Maybe I should speak to their customer service and see if they can recommend something.  It soooo bloody confusing.  Skoda Superb 2.0 TSI 2015 onwards doesn't seem to come up on wheel searches now that I am looking correctly (i.e. TSI not TDI!)

Appreciate your help.

Thanks.

Thanks @Bud

I would rather go new.  For some reason on mytyres it won't find my car if I am looking for steel wheels.  After selecting Skoda then Superb 2.0 TSI it gives me the choice of 2:

  •     3T 1984ccm 147 kW BJ.: 07.2008-02.2015
  •     3T 1984ccm 147 kW BJ.: 09.2009-02.2015

Neither of which seem right as mine is a 17 plate or am I being dense?

Thanks!

So I rang mytyres and they do not sell steel wheels that will fit my superb :(  I assumed as it was quite a common car there would be no problem - but I guess people don't like steel wheels and only want alloys.  Bugger!

@Gizmo - I was reading the very long thread started by you ("S3 Winter wheel...")  so am I right that to be legit/OEM recommendations I should follow the table:

215/60 R16 95V on 6 ½”x 16” ET41

215/55 R17 94W on 7”x17” ET40 or 6 ½”x17” ET41

235/45 R18 94W on 8”x18” ET44

235/40 R19 96W on 8”x19” ET44

So for example I could find a wheel  8J x 19 ET44 and then would buy a 235/40 R19 96W tyre to match?  Or 6.5J x 16 ET41 and fit a 215/60 R16 95V tyre?

If the above is right for my SUPERB (ESTATE 2.0 TSI L&K 5dr DSG 2017) then I feel a bit more confident about shopping around...or even Ebay!

If anyone can answer the above that would be great.

Thanks

Kind of,

all you said above is correct apart from one thing, the 2.0 TSi needs a minimum of 17” wheels to clear the front brakes.
