"Italian TuneUp" / Diesel Purge

Featured Replies

In another current thread (Tougher MOT for old diesels) a poster has suggested conducting an "Italian TuneUp" (ie. give it a good razzing, under carefully controlled conditions of course) and having dosed the car beforehand with a Diesel Purge additive.

Having relatively recently bought an Octy (2.0tdi 4x4 estate) with a "careful lady owner" I've been wondering about giving it a good blowout "just in case".  Any experiences/recommendations on what works and how best to use it (ie. in the fuel tank or direct into the diesel filter housing)?

Get yourself some BG244 or Archoil 6400-d. Put in the tank when you need to fill up and try to make the tank last so the cleaner has time to dissolve any build ups. When you get to 1/4 tank refill and drive as normal and give it the occasional sustained high revs to blow any loose soot from the exhaust.

Use the fuel cleaner once a year to keep the fuel system in good order.

A return trip to Cornwall should do it.

However, I’m not sure if that’s going to help with the condition of the EGR cooler as far as it’s fouling is concerned.  AFAIK an Italian tune won’t resolve that issue.

A quick 12-14 hour round trip :)  At least that slippery white stuff they've been scattering on the roads down there is melting now ...

Mind you, it would be a good excuse to revisit the Sharp's brewery and stock up on a few gallons of their local beers.  I really enjoyed beer direct from the brewery tap when I was working down there.

Does it have a DPF? I was on the understanding that all 2.0 TDI 4x4 variants of the Octavia (8V SOHC & 16V DOHC) got a diesel particulate filter.

If it has a DPF and it is working effectively then the soot test should be zero. In which case a thrash around the block, or a diesel additive (snake oil) wouldn't be needed.

I assuming the 2005 Passat 1.9 TDI you referenced on the other thread that recently failed did not have a DPF?

Thanks for the info.  It's a 140 bhp BMM motor with option 7GG (EU4 DPF), so no snake oil needed.  Shame about the thrash around the block, though; I was looking forward to that :)

BTW the Passat query came from the OP in the original thread, not me.
