Windscreen washer problem

Featured Replies

Hi! I need some advice. Recently the windscreen washer stopped working. The headlight washers still work, and the windscreen wiper works. This happened once before. I solved it then by  taking the fuse for the washer system in and out a few times of its socket. Thinking the damp west coast Weather here in Norway might have an influence on the electronics..  I tried the same method this time, to no avail. Could it be a faulty washer pump, and in that case where is it located? Other possible diy solutions? Thankful for any advice i can get

Have you checked the fuse, has it blown?

Yes, I checked and the fuse was fine, not blown.

According to the wiring diagram the windscreen washer pump is not fused but controlled straight by J519 - BCM - and the headlight washer is fused  on fuse 36 and relayed.

Thanks. Maybe a stupid question, but what is the j519 and BCM? Are these control units? Is there a main washer pump for the windscreen and a secondary for the headlights or a single pump for the whole system? The wiper function (the three wipes that should commence when you pull the washer handle) only works now and then. The headlight washers function, but only after pulling the washer handle five times.. I suspect a faulty relay or some faulty control unit..

Did you check or replace the fuse?

I would always replace before you start looking for other faults

Thank you. I agree. Last night i did replace the (30A) fuse. Strange things then happened: everything regarding both windscreen and headlight washers went dead, no reaction in the headlight washers at all.. So i put the original fuse back and now the headlight washers works again (after five pulls on the handle). Still no function in the windscreen washers. Very strange..

Has the pipe come off at the jets (under the bonnet)?

Thanks for your reply.

No, the pipes are fine as far as I can see.. There are no signs of leakage either. I believe it must be a electrical problem.

My rear wiper stopped working for a few days recently, and now its back again. I blame an aging CANBUS network.

True. Age is definetly a factor. Mine is a 10 year old car now so no real surprise. I gave up trying to solve the problem myself. It’s at a garage now, being fixed. They think it’s the windscreen washer pump and will replace it. Hope everything works after that. The car needed a service anyway so had that done at the same time. Hope your problem is easily fixed. If wipers don’t respond when rear window washer is activated it might be the pump and the two way communication sending info of defective pump that stops the wiper action. Worth checking the pump first, wiper engine second. Good luck

Hi,

The BCM is a controller which controls lots of functions in your car like a computer. If your headlight washers only spray every 5th time that is normal. The default setting is that they come on every 5th time with the windscreen wiper. The headlight pump is separate from the windscreen and tailgate jets. To get to the pump it is a bumper-off job.
