Front tyres grabbing when cold 4X4

Featured Replies

Hi,

Normally after the car has been sat for a while and you drive off if you turn the steering nearly on full lock you get a noise from the front tyres as if the tyres are jumping across the floor. Feels like it too.

I would say it’s the limited slip diff not slipping when cold. Does it in forwards and reverse

front tyres aren’t wearing to well either.

Every day when I pull out of the car park I get the same. When car is warm it’s fine.

Anyone had similar problems.

How old is your car and how many miles has it done?

Likely brakes grabbing more than a limited slip diff.  You do not have a LSD.

So what tyres are on and at what pressures?

Mercedes got around this on the GLC by fitting Cross Climate tyres.

Looks like it’s a cold tyre problem.

crappy Bridgestone fitted

2.4 bar

What are the tread depths, with the 4x4 not good to have more than 2.5 - 3.0mm difference, as circumference is different and can strain the haldex long term which causes premature wear (and may lead to expensive failure eventually)

Might be worth getting tyres swapped front - back, and see if it helps

When I'm on a full lock and I move forward slowly (just with brakes off on my 1.5 TSI DSG) - either back or forwards on parking manoeuvres I get noise from the steering wheel and when I open the window I hear cracking noises coming from the front. Mine doesn't sound like the tyres but more mechanical. Do you have a recording of yours?

Just had another listen to mine again and now I'm beginning to think it's the sound of the tyres! I'm on Bridgestone too
