Hi all,

I have a 2014 Octavia VRS and I'm looking to get a cheap MIB 2 unit to replace the existing MIB 1. Also looking to get a new USB port to allow Apple Carplay as well.

So my question is can someone point me in the direction of where to get a cheap Skoda MIB 2 unit and the updated USB port as well please  ?

Also, will I need to get a replacement screen for the MIB 2 to allow all the features or will it work on the existing one ? I'm looking at upgrading the screen at a later date but don't want to be spending too much at the moment.

Thanks in advance :)

You’ll need the screen too unless you have a Columbus already. Then the 8 inch screen works with both. Are you wanting an Amundsen or a Columbus? I recommend an Amundsen, 5E0035874A is the one you want, not 5E0035874B. That one will not work. The USB is 5Q0035726E. Cost wise you will be looking at £120-170 for the radio, £10-30 for the USB, £100 or so for a 6.5 inch screen or £200-250 for an 8 inch screen. £30-100 for component protection removal and about £180 for coding to make it all work. Also if you don’t already have nav you’ll need a GPS antenna and they are £6-10 for an aftermarket one. I bought all my stuff on eBay and I’ve yet to find anywhere that can beat eBay for ease of finding stuff and the prices are usually reasonable if you are willing to sift through the chancers.

Same thing want to upgrade, but every time I see price... :(

Can I ask, how do you know if you have MIB1 or MIB2?

Reconsidered buying aftermarket replacement CANBUS unit? Some look particularly capable, seem better then OEM units.

For example:

https://www.kenwood-electronics.co.uk/car/oem/skoda/GVN-MIB1/

https://www.alpine.co.uk/p/Products/SingleView/X901D-OC3

Chinese have many android clones, with OEM Škoda shape. From what I've learned so far, people are happy. Installation in straightforward, not a challenge as for another incompatible OEM.

Can it run SmartLink? If that’s not in the menu it’s a sure fire way to tell. If you have the smaller (5.8 inch) screen and you have a CD drive then it’s a MIB1 for sure. However the larger screen Columbus has a CD drive either way.

I don’t have smartlink, but I do have the bigger Columbus display and the unit in the glovebox with 2 SD card slots and a CD drive.

Must be MIB1 - mine is a 2013 VRS.

Yep. I forgot to add that week 22 2015 build was the change over date from MY15.5 to MY16. At least if you want to do a MIB2 upgrade you won’t have to change the screen. I recommend it though. I have the MIB2.5 Columbus in now (MIB2 unit re worked to MIB2.5 spec) and the bigger 9.2 inch screen and it makes such a big difference IMO.

Yeah I’ve been following your thread. Amazing the work you have done. Might look into this. All I would love is car play to be honest

Hi Sasha,

Thanks for all the info, thats really helpful :)

Is this the correct part number for the 6.5" screen '5E0919605J', and this the correct part number for the 8" screen '5E0919605M' ?

Also, where can you recommend for the coding to be done ?

Thanks.

Hi Nidza,

I've looked at a couple of these but they're so expensive! plus i'd like to try and keep it OEM as well.

Nice Sasha!

Loving the Virtual Cockpit as well.

Did you re-work the MIB2 unit to 2.5 yourself or did you have to get someone else to do that ?

Sorry for the late replies everyone, been a busy couple of days.

You have the part numbers correct, alternatively the 5E0919606 8 inch PFL Columbus screen also works with it. I didn’t touch the new radio, it came prepared and ready from the genius that is pab567 on here and he is the man I recommend for radio work. If you get an Amundsen or a Columbus he can help. Please stick to a 5Q0035874A Amundsen made by TechniSat, not a 5Q0035874B unit. These can’t be worked with. Also with Columbus units, stick to the ones made by Harman.

For coding you will need to travel a bit, I know someone in Hemel Hempstead who can do it, but nobody in Kent.

(looking into the MIB2.5 & VC in a Superb... however it’s coming in at around £2.5K :o )

Just stumbled across this and your very helpfull and in the know, i have seen a  5E0035874A on ebay would that be a straight swap for my mib2 and is the smartlink activation tied to the screen or the head unit, my unit has 2 sd's and no cd but i would like a bigger screen

If your radio part number is 5Q0035874A or B then it’s a MIB2 Amundsen (certainly looks it in the picture there) so you will be able to swap the screen with an 8 inch FL unit (5E0919605M is the one you need) without any mods except cutting a locator tab away on the screen connection plug. The screen is just a screen and displays what the radio commands so any features the radio has are tied to the radio. If you have SmartLink now, changing the screen won’t take it away. If you don’t have SmartLink now, changing the screen won’t add it. The APP button won’t work but you can access the traffic menu and the SmartLink menu through the main menu as you do now.

Brilliant thank you sasha

Hi I have the following infotainment with navigation, but no MirrorLink/SmartLink icon :( Do you know if SmartLink can be installed on it?

That’s a MIB1, need a MIB2 radio and screen for SmartLink unfortunately.

Hi guys, I´m new around here but I have a 2013 octavia 5e with the mib1 bolero unit and I was looking to upgrade in order to have apple carplay. From what I´ve seen I need to get a mib2 screen and main unit, however I don´t know exactly what my options are. I´m pretty sure that the 6,5 inch screen (I think that is the correct size) came with apple carplay and that I would need to also get the main unit for it to work. Ideally I would like to have the 8 inch system from the facelift model but I´m not sure on compatibility. I am also unsure of the situation about having to unlock the unit to make it work on a different car.

I would really appreciate any help because I´m having a hard time doing research since there are so many different models and combinations of screens and units so if anyone knows about this stuff please point me out in the right direction😅.

Thanks in advance!

Hello Sasha,

can you help clarifying this - you say that ".....Amundsen, 5E0035874A" is a MIB2 unit in the glove department and it can be used with Columbus ?

Or I got something wrong here ?

Than you in advance !!
