EPC light and Low oil light flashing

Featured Replies

My 09 tsi estate had a interim service last month and a couple of weeks later when i made a tight turn at speed the epc light and low oil warning light flashed up and the engine started sounding like a bag of spanners fighting to escape and car lost power.  A few seconds later when car was level again everything seems to have returned to normal  with the car accelerating ok. Since then this has happened twice, once when parked up a steep hill and also again when quickly turning around a tight corner. I've checked the oil level and level is more or less within the expected level and the car drives normal. The engine does sound  a lot more rattly especially when started in the morning but then it's got 125 k miles and i've never had to add oil in the last 5000 miles i've owned the car.

I'm speculating it's the dreaded tsi malaise but not sure how to proceed. Any ideas from the forum?

Don't keep running it - you may have a cam/oil pump chain issue.

I'd get it towed to a specialist.  It might be a simple as a mis fitted oil filter (last thing done was a service) causing a lack of oil pressure somehow - the cam chain tensioner is oil pressurised. If slack you would get an error as the cam shaft will be possibly in the wrong position!

I'd be worried about the chain and tensioner on an 09 car so it might be worth getting this done anyway (treat it as an expensive cam belt job)

You mentioned about being parked up a hill - if left in gear it was able to turn the engine backwards even only a bit then on a worn tensioner it can effectively retract it so the chain is slack until the car is next started and oil pressure built up - this keeps the chain slack for a few seconds when first running and can eventually cause big damage especially if the chain jumps a few sprocket teeth.

Diagram on advert showing the two chains:-

Thanks for the reply.  I'm optimistically leaning towards a mis fitted oil filter because i remember after the service when i had the car home i opened the bonnet to check the state of the engine bay and found a screw driver stuck under the plastic engine cover. Obviously not the sign of quality workmanship so maybe plenty more short cuts taken when servicing the car.

I have time off next wek so may get it to a specialist for a check before thinking the next step

Just careful in the meantime - if the chain jumps it's game over for the engine
