Paul et all. Something to be aware of if you do low miles on a 1.4TDi, is problems with the EGR/fuel shutoff valve. With low mileage, this valve gets clogged up with muck. Mine did after a few years of doing circa 4k a year, and on occasions I had to manually reset it. What is supposed to happen, is that on switch off, the valve shuts off fuel, then re opens. But with low miles comes sludge and valve sticks. Cure is to take car out and give it a good burn up once a week. But if this is problem. Remove the engine cover ( nice looking sound proofing ,that drops all sorts of gunk on to the engine. Take the driver side wiper mount as a reference and find the air intake hose . Hose changes to a metal mount( moving to passenger side), and behind this is the offending valve.

Air, not fuel, is shut off by that valve. I think I may have told you this 5 times now @VWD, do you not believe me?

Wino- apologies, as I've never seen any post from you on this, so I defer to your training. BUT-does it matter- air/fuel shut off, It is not going to start as it needs both to run. My experiences are as a result of an AA call-out for a non start fault. Report states that "fuel shut off valve was stuck". My post was to make folks aware of problems that can occur without a few miles /month or a regular "Italian tune up" (AKA a good blast for about ten miles weekly).

Training, what training? Reading and observing.

Air is shut off by this valve to give a cleaner, non-shuddery shutdown; cutting fuel alone doesn't do that.  It can also be used in partial closing to change the pressure ratios to allow higher EGR flow rates, though I'm not sure whether that actually is implemented on your engine.

It is something worth bearing in mind as a possible failure mode, I agree. Unfortunate that your AA man had his terminology mixed up.

I was starting to think you actually believe it is shutting off fuel, despite the complete absence of fuel pipes going to or from that valve?

Have a look next time you have the bonnet open, it may help you remember.
