How to remove wheel bolt caps?

Featured Replies

I need to remove the wheel bolt caps on my VRS but I don't have the Extraction pliers for the wheel bolt caps.
What's the best way to remove them with out damaging them too much?

Buy the correct tool off ebay for £2.89

ALLOY WHEEL NUT BOLT CAP REMOVER TOOL KEY FOR AUDI VW SKODA SEAT

or long nosed pliers.

Check the tools in your spare wheel kit. There may be one there.

I've seen I can get it online. But postage here will take too long.

Even if I order them now the soonest they will arrive is in two weeks.
I'm going to have to find another way.
I was hoping someone would have a suggestion on what I could do.

Currently the best I've got is using a pair of needle nose pliers and wrapping the tips with something like tape or heat shrink to try and avoid damaging the caps.

A crochet hook works,  just catch the lip and pull.

or make your own,  piece of strong wire, a wire hanger is good for this,

bent and a little turn up to hook the cap.  Welding wire is quick and easy to use.

Ask a VW Driver if you can borrow theirs, or stop a a Dealership, Parts Desk, or ask at a Tyre & Exhaust fitting centre.

Making one.

Similar to this DIY Ignition Coil removal tool.

Just a different turn in of the bottom.

Warm up a hot glue stick, apply to the bolt cap and let it cool. It should then come off. Pop the stick back off and clean the residue. Repeat for all the caps, either one at a time or if you have a multitude of sticks, many at a time...

Otherwise the pliers method as mentioned. Tyre shops usually do this but it can scuff them a little if care is not taken. If in a big rush, pull them off and buy a new set from a dealer or off Ebay. No big rush to get them and they will cost around £20 a set, with a removal tool. The caps are only plastic.

Most tyre places simply use thin pliers.

Yep, I bet they are rough as a badger. The VAG tool is inexpensive and does what it says on the can. If you were on the roadside in pouring rain, and desperate then use a screwdriver, protecting the alloy to lever it off.

Asked the local tyre guy if he had something to get them off but they just use pliers there.
My idea of pliers with tape/heat shrink hasn't worked well.
I tried wire too but that didn't work.
I looked at buying the tool from eBay again. Shipping is two months!

Tried the glue stick thing, that didn't work.
Tried another wire, that got one off but mangled it worse that the pliers with tape.
Tried using two tiny allan keys which was a failure
Tried wrapping fishing line around the cap, no big surprise but that didn't work either.

Any VW, Audi, Seat, Skoda dealership should be able to sell you one!b Probably many other vehicle/wheel manufacturers/retailers, too but thats a maybe.

I finally got the damn things off!
I ended up modifying a plastic peg to do so.
Taking the peg apart and cutting in to small groves at the ends that were just enough to hook the lip of the cover.
It was very fiddly but in the end I managed to get them all off.

...Next you will be making a diy tool to remove the front sidelight bulbs!

I did order the tool Estimated delivery is anywhere between the 8th of March and the 15th of April!

Is that from China? I would have used a dealer. Its probably ok now, if you did the job anyway.
