Moving double din stereo up

Featured Replies

Hi all

I have a 64 reg Fabia Mk2, and I was thinking about changing the double din stereo for a touch screen head unit, however for things like navigation I'd prefer if it was lightly higher, underneath the air vents, similar to the Mk3 (swapping the fan controls and stereo essentially). I was wondering if anyone has already done so/know of kits, if not might take it on as a project to make a new frame for the centre console, and try and rearrange the electronics behind it, dropping the fan controls and A/C button to where the stereo currently lies.

There is obviously the gap and slight dip above where the stereo currently sits and the frame would need to bridge this

Now thats a lot of work.........

Be easier to fit a factory nav unit and maxidot display (if you dont have one) and the nav appears on the dash..

Urbanpanzer, what do you know about the fitting of a maxidot in a car that wasn't equiped ?
I heard that you have to program the new cluster in, but it wasn't clear what has to be done. Do you just have to change the mileage and "tell" the cluster that this is now it's new car ? Or do you have to actually program the funtions in "by hand" ?

I dont have maxidot sadly otherwise this is what I would have done, theres a few breakers on ebay flogging off some kit, but in my research sorting out maxidot is a lot of work in itself

In all honesty I'm not 100% sure, but if its like "most" other makes you can sync / forward a mileage if you say bought a used one, but you cant go backwards so you would need to purchase a cluster with a lower mileage than your vehicle AND from a vehicle with the same engine / model year.

How much of the wiring is different I don't know, but studying the wiring diagrams would not take to long to see whats potentially missing, offcourse you could purchase an new interior loom and do it that way, but its always about cost V want.

So my best bet would be to ask my Skoda dealership if they can do it ?

That depends on how big your pockets are !!!.....

After a bit if further reading, as long as the information stored in the current dash is read / stored into the diagnostic machine "BEFORE" disconnection.....then it can be re-written to a new one.

Well this means that I need to let them disconnect my current instrument cluster, which will add some labor costs.

I will ring them tomorrow to see if they would do it, and at what cost. Sadly it is possible that they will simply not want to do it.

My Skoda dealership charged me 40€ to change my steering wheel, so I guess for this job which requires some coding they should charge something like 100-120€
