Inlet manifold

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain how does oil get in there am confused.com

Oil vapour from the engine is captured by the pollution control system and recycled through the air inlet.

It passes through the inlet pipework, the turbo and intercooler, causing a black oiley build up as it goes before the engine finally burns it.

If you didn't know you'd suspect the turbo oil seals were worn, allowing oil to accumulate in the intercooler and generally gumming up the inlet manifold and valves.

If you ever have the head off and want to clean the manifold and valves I can recommend a pressure washer fitted with a turbo type lance and fed by the hot water tap.

Works wonders.

Then again there are other methods like using chemicals:

So could that cause the inlet manifold to weep oil out of the gasket were it's bolted to the head.

Thanks

Yes in extreme cases this could happen but I would expect if this is happening you have oil issues somewhere upstream, the engine is allowed to idle for extended periods and low rpm is used during driving.

Thanks for the reply.

A do drive like a grandad low rpm and it does idle quite often so a need to change the gasket.

Thanks

Not that these things should cause a gasket to fail, maybe just nipping up the bolts will sort things.

Cheers

Never thought of that.

just thought it needed a new gasket
