Alloy Repair + Tyres question

Featured Replies

Hi all

One pothole too many... and this has happened , No guides on youtube for Repairing Powder coated Alloys other than full respray.

1st Question

For the meantime, Looking at home repair using wheel repair putty. i have top coat of paint ral 6018 and clear laquer.

Will this need a fine dremel or sand to smooth out, has anyone used this putty filler ?

Also since the tyre side wall is damaged this tyre needs replacing and will be replaced as 2 sets at front:

2nd Question,

Can you put (2 x 215 / 40R / 17 Tyres (same make IE Goodyear to the front)

and put (2 x 205 /40R / 17 Tyres) (Same make IE pilot sport 3 but not as wide to the rear

I believe as long as the same size of tyre is on the same axle then it’s ok, doesn’t matter if it’s a different brand all that matters that the sizes are the same.

Actually saying that my cars just passed it’s MOT and my fronts were (before I changed to winters) 205/45 on the fronts and 205/40 on the rear so it will be ok.

Go to the council with the story and pictures of the pothole and make a claim.

But if the difference in diameter between the front and rear tyres is to much the ABS will play up.

The car will expect to see all the wheels/tyres to travel at the same speed.

4.9% difference between 215 40 17's and 205 40 17's.

29.6 is 1.34% smaller than 30,

but 30 - 29.6 = 0.4 MPH

Not 4.9% as first noted.

Thanks AG Falco

The ABS (or ESP) does not play up if you run 215/40 R17 or 205/40 R 17 on the front and 205/40 R 17 on the back.

Neither does the TPMS. (you set what you set and it looks for a difference from what is set.)

The ABS is comparing across the axle.  But even when you fit a 195/55 R 15 spare the ABS does not play up.

I ran different fronts and rears for many thousands of miles, different set ups summer, winter etc, and year by year.
