exhaust aromas

Featured Replies

i am using archoil 6900 D max to normal dilution 40ml to 40 litres...1000:1

my mot readings were clear and my oil levels are always ok...dont see any smoke coming from the exhaust

but

i have noticed recently when accelerating,  a vehicle which is following starts to drop back quite a way as i picked up speed to keep up with traffic...ie when joining a road from a roundabout or junction etc..and using the turbo for extra power...

do these additives have a smell like castrol R...for example...i dont think i smell that bad

:biggrin::crying:

If the car is good condition and serviced reguarly, there is no need for additives.

i use the additives on recommendation and do get favourable results...smoother running, and increased mpg

i could go back to not using them of course and see if there is really an advantage to using archoil products but i couldnt see if the injectors were getting cleaned and the turbo...

i cant maintain the injectors easily although i know how from other experiences with diesels...so i concentrated on that if it was an advantage which firstly drew me to the thoughts of using a cleaning additive which is also reputed to raise cetane levels??

being new to owning a diesel i chose to use these additives as i also used additives to my previous petrol car

what do you think?

cheers

The idea of these cleaners is o help run clean but if added, you may experience a little more sh-tuff coming out the exhaust for a tankful of fuel. After that, it should run cleaner...

You are not getting your own personal cloud when driving a little faster for a while, then stopping at say, a set of lights, roundabout, etc  on a quick road (A39 perhaps)?

Proper, stinky grey cloud of fumes, I am referring to, not just a puff on acceleration, which is common on diesels.

Not used Archer stuff but use Cataclean with no big issues.

yes thats it...saw it the other day as i turbo'ed it up a hill in second...a puff showing in the sunlight...now i know

think it only happens when i really accellerate up to 3000 rpm in a low gear which i understand means the turbo is cutting in..?..not really sure how it works

its about time for an annual clean out with the Archer "once a year cleaner"...AR6400-D MAX

i am quite sure one mans meat is another mans meat in this situation

where what it does

is not really what its called

but what it is...?

any product name will do!...the same.

thanks for the reply...

ps my local garage who does my servicing and repairs and the garage where i get the aircon done both have Forte product for sale..

cheers

...I am hoping that the description I gave you may not be the issue as this is common when a turbo fails... Drive a bit spirited, come to a halt and then a huge puff of smelly smoke engulfs you! Amusing to onlookers, embarrassing and costly to the owner! Hopefully it just needs a clean. I find Asda diesel makes my car smoke more then say, branded fuel from a major supplier. Perhaps less additives already in the fuel!

I think I am correct in saying you do not have the DPF? This will smoke more than one fitted with it, if the DPF vehicle is running properly.

no smelly engulfing happened as far as i can gather

the car is 87000 and 11 years old...and you are right no DPF on this model

what i put down to the turbo coming in is a release of power as i depress the throttle in a lowish gear to accelerate and as i said...there is a twisty hill near me on the road from falmouth to helston it goes down and then up with a tight bend at the bottom....what i normally do is come down the incline and at the bottom be in second gear or perhaps third...

then as i take the bend give the engine a burst of throttle...i can feel the acceleration then...which i take is the turbo...no huge puffs as far as i can see...9 months ago i gave the car the full clean out with the once a year cleaner...and have then followed on with the fill up cleaner each tankful...usually 40 litres..

recently after my last fill up with texaco and added the cleaner....(i avoid supermarket fuels..and the overpriced regular shell diesel)....the engine seems smoother and due to i think the better weather quickly registers 40 mpg through the town and then 55-58 on a longish 50mile return journey keeping around 60mph...

last summer the same journeys were getting 63 mpg..

i dont normally drive hard but use the high vacuum principle slowly increasing speed to cruising...albeit i like to exercise the turbo to "clean" it...its there and i reckon not using it is problematical

what makes it cut in is not too clear ....its a vw 1.4 Tdi engine

its 220 miles to a fill up and i will be doing the annual clean out...

last 2 mot's gave the reading PASS so i assume they would find out then if smokey was a problem...

glad of this discussion really and greatful for your help and advice

cheers
