Apple Carplay

Featured Replies

Hi,

Does mu Yeti SE have Apple Carplay? I would like to use the satnav om my iphone on the console screen if it is possible.

Thanks,

G

Only if it has the latest infotainment unit fitted and smartlink has been enabled. It will be pretty obvious if available as the selection button will turn it on with the phone connected via the usb socket. If you have the latest unit without smartlink, a dealer can enable it. Prices vary but should be less than £150. This was an option on purchase, but can be done anytime later by a dealer.

Once enabled the phone satnav will appear on the screen.

If it's after May 2015 it should be possible to have it activated if it does not already have it.

Thanks guys. It is a 2017 model one of the last. If it can be enabled is there an annual cost?

Should be a one off cost to activate smartlink, no monthly or yearly fees.

Many thanks, I presume there would be no problem with using Apple maps or Co-Pilot maps?

Have a look here:

https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/

It lists Google Maps, Baidu and Waze as non-Apple nav apps that work with Carplay.  That's not to say that there aren't more - that web page is high on glitz, low on useful information IMO.  Digging around in the iPhone app store might reveal more.  As I don't have an Apple mobile device it looks like I can't access  the app store myself to check (happy to be proven wrong about this as it does seem a bit unhelpful - anyone can poke around in the Google Play Store to see what Android apps are available).

If it's anything at all like Android Auto, you have to tell SmartLink which of the compatible nav apps that you have installed on the phone you want it to use.  So that's another way to check: install the app, then see whether SmartLink offers it to you as one of the nav app options.

You'll need to pay a dealer a one-off price to enable SmartLink.  It should be around the £130 mark.  There are no ongoing costs apart from those that might arise from the use of mobile data, which nav apps will almost always need unless you manage to stay wholly within an area that you have previously downloaded as an offline map - and even then you won't get real-time features like intelligent routing around traffic hold-ups.

Apple is different to Google.  An app is either CarPlay-capable or it isn’t.  If it is then it will show up as an icon on the CarPlay screen.  AFAIK there’s no way to ‘force’ an app to show up or mirror to a CarPlay head unit.

Many thanks guys that is most helpful.  Seems a bit expensive to show my satnav on a screen i think I'll wait until I change the Yeti for a Kodaq it is 2 years old already, but I do love her.

You get quite a bit more than just your "phone on a screen", at least with Android Auto (not an Apple person myself). Like voice control that actually works well, as compared to the absolute joke that's fitted as standard.

Android Auto is the same: the SmartLink screen only offers you the apps on your device which are compatible with Android Auto.  You certainly don't get access to all the apps on the device.

IIRC (I've only played with it once) the way to select a particular app for a particular function is to press and hold the icon on the SmartLink screen for that function.  So for navigation apps you press and hold the navigation icon.  It will then show you a list of the Android Auto compatible navigation apps on the device.  You tap on the one you want to use, and that becomes the default app that it activates when you tap on the navigation icon.

I have only used Apple CarPlay in my SEAT, but I assume it would work the same across all CarPlay devices.  You plug your phone in, you allow the car and phone to 'pair' and then you get a basic iOS-looking screen on your head unit with all CarPlay-enabled apps shown - you are able to move them around if you wish.  Then you simply touch the one you want to use, just like using the phone.  The functionalility of the app through the CarPlay screen is often significantly 'dumbed-down' but Apple and Google Maps work well enough, as does Amazon Music.  You can also have text messages read out, but can't compose them by typing.  Siri works very well too, as mentioned above.

Thanks for the help it is very much appreciated and gives me food for thought.

Ah, that does sound a bit different to how Android Auto works with SmartLink in my Yeti.  The car certainly recognises when the phone has been plugged in almost immediately and I don't recall having to go through an actual 'pairing' process with the SmartLink.  You do need the bluetooth connection (at least, it certainly uses it if it's available - which does of course require car and phone to be paired).

You can compose and send SMS hands free as well.
