Volvos to limit new cars to 112mph..

Featured Replies

If the speed limit where I live is 70mph, why aren't all cars using the roads limited to 70mph? (or even limited to the speed of each individual road).

Never really understood this.

I am driving at 40mph. You are following me and decide to try and overtake. I respond by accelerating. Do you really want to be hung out to dry?

 About time. Only dangerous idiots that should be locked up drive at 110+ mph on public roads.

Automatic speed limiters tied to road limits, full function black boxes and vehicle speed and location tracking will become mandatory in the not too distant future.

Google do the last bit already via your android mobile phone whether you give them permission or not. Ecall, (sos button) which is mandatory on all new cars from April 2018 can also do this, so its not just fantasy.

Arguably, the speed limiter is no different to the German manufacturer's "Gentlemen's agreement" of limiting performance to 155mph which noone argues about. Its just a lower limit which is still 30-40% higher than the max limit on any public road.

Why not limit all to 70? Several reasons. Mainly safety.. having sat behind many "elephant races" thats what every road would be like permanently, which would just increase accident rates and road rage incidents.

Also, manufacturers want to at least try and buffer themselves a bit from "individual vs corporate liability" its up to the user not to break the law, not the manufacturer's to prevent them from doing so.
