Manual gear oil cost, what?!

Featured Replies

Was just told by a Skoda dealer that my 6 speed manual gearbox takes 6.5 litres of oil, and is €40 a litre!  Both those numbers seem impossible.

Can't see the capacity in the owners manual, but phoned another dealer and was told capacity is 2.2 l which is much more believable.

I am pretty sure that the even engine does not take 6.5ltrs, more like 4-5ltrs. Let alone the gearbox.

You can buy gearbox oil from under £10 per litre and yes I believe the capacity is between 2 and 2.5 litres.

Steviebaby.....listen carefully......

Its a sealed for life gearbox and unless mega high mileage or mega abuse,or its broken or leaking, no gearbox oil change is necessary. You are wasting money and time changing it at 22,000km. You are also putting it at high risk of a garage/dealer cockup/damage as they have probably never done this job and so will learn on your car aka guinea pig no.1

Wrong quantity refilled, wrong method, car not level, wrong bits/plugs removed, bits/level plugs not refitted, contamination introduced, wrong oil used.......it happens.

Manual gearboxes are orders of magnitude more reliable than DSG boxes which may be whats confusing/worrying you.

Spend your money on OCD therapy instead.

Xman, that is excellent advice and you are 100%. However, I am the second owner, I noticed on a service document in the car that 'oil leak' was noted in November last year. It must have been fixed as there is no leak now, but there is whine from the box in 1st. I've owned a Passat with a 6 speed manual that didn't have this sound. Maybe it is a characteristic, I don't know. But changing the oil on these boxes is not rocket science or expensive, and the quality and volume of the oil that comes out may at least put my mind again ease. Worse case scenario the box was leaking, and not properly refilled, hence the whining.

But take your point, were it not for the whine I would leave well enough alone.
