Diesel compression test ?

Featured Replies

Hi All, I am hoping to do a compression test on my 2009 Ocy Scout 2ltr TDI via the glow plugs, I haven't done it before on a diesel but I am thinking along the lines of - start the car and let it get to normal temp and remove the pump fuse and the engine will eventually stop, remove all glow plugs to allow for easier cranking fit tester to one cylinder at a time and measure (what value is normal ?), let the engine cool right down ideally overnight  and retest, refit glow plugs and fuse switch ignition on and off a couple of times to prime the fuel line and then hopefully it should start. Anybody see anything wrong with that or know which fuse is just for the pump ? It would then stop diesel being injected into the bores and stop it getting a better seal. Cheers Stuart

I can't comment on the 2.0, but based on the fact that the 1.9 comes from the factory at around 350-500 psi. Anything lower than 300 I'd be concerned about.

Why are you feeling the need to do a compression test? What symptoms are you experiencing to lead to this train of thought?

Has your engine done mega-miles? Has it not had regular oil changes with the correct spec oil?

Just curious. I believe these engines are bomb proof if looked after.

Is this a PD engine or CR?

From my experience a PD engine will run fine with no lift pump in the tank, especially if its already running ( I have tried it before ) If you do let it sit a while though it will probably fail to start.

If its the CR engine starving the HPFP of diesel is a very very bad idea, you would be better off just unplugging the injectors I think.

It has a lumpy tickover for ages when warm and I have changed a couple of sensors to no avail, but the other day I picked up a compression tester so I thought I would do a test to see if anything is leaky eg valves, I am just doing a cold test first then I will warm it up and see if any of the pressures drop, I did a cleanup of the inlet manifold about 3 years ago so I have been wondering if there's a sticky valve ? The engine is a BMM so the glow plugs are easy to access, OK I will go and have a quick play. Cheers Stuart

Did you carry out the test? If so what were your findings?
