Throttle pedal discomfort

Featured Replies

Hello knowledgeable and helpful folks of Briskoda. I've taken the plunge and swapped my Mk II Octavia manual for an S3 Superb with the DSG box. It's an SE with the manually adjustable fabric seats.

In general, it's great. In terms of kit and refinement, it's night and day from the Octavia. I keep finding myself speeding as it is so quiet and the DSG box makes the whole thing effortless. Used the ACC for the first time on the motorway this morning, very impressive, although a bi unnerving.

However, as per the title, I am finding the throttle pedal is causing me some leg pain now after having had the car for about a week. Didn't experience it on the test drive or the hour or so drive home but I have now moved the seating position about a bit and can't seem to get back to a good position for my right foot.

Thinking back to the Octavia, it had a flat throttle pedal that was hinged from the floor and seemed to need a bit more pressure to get it to move so I could gently rest my foot on it and push my foot down when needing to accelerate. In the Superb, the pedal is hinged from above and seems to only need a light touch to get it to move (although seems to need more pressure to get the car to actually accelerate, I guess this is what people talk about in terms of the poor throttle response?) so I suppose it needs a slightly different foot movement. It feels like I am having to bend my leg more, but if I move the seat further back, the steering wheel feels too far away even with it pulled all the way out.

Has anyone else make the swap from a Mk II Octy to Superb and found the same issue? Any tips on seat adjustment, or will I just get used to it?

I would say that I generally need to go for a longer legged trouser as I find the "Normal" leg length too short and conversely find that coat sleeves often come down to my knuckles, so I guess I have long legs and short arms!

Hi ! I'm not very tall about 5'8 and came from an Oct II. Strangely I had problems with my left leg at first with pain in the knee. Lots of messinging about with all the adjustment including steering wheel reach and height sorted.

Thanks, good to know you eventually got comfortable. I had the Octavia for 7 years so I suppose there is a lot of muscle memory to overcome.

I'm about the same height, how high do you have the seat? In the Octavia, I had it almost as low as it could go, but I am wondering if that might not be suitable in the Superb.

I'll check and let you know but its not that low...

@budster came from a civic with floor mounted accelerator and felt the same. Some adjustments (exactly like you) and still feel a bit off but getting used to it.

More of a problem on long journeys but can mitigate with ACC. I thought it's only me but hey ho...

I've had the same in the superb. Would prefer to sit further back but the wheel is pulled out to the max.

Well, at least you can take some solace from knowing you are not alone.

My issue is with the 2012 Fabia accelerator pedal. Seems that plastic has replaced metal and rubber. This makes for a more slippery surface and lighter tension. This gives me serious leg pain on long journeys.

Is there a replacement pedal or rubber cover to mitigate these issues?

@JonSIII

Don’t you have this issue too that resulted in physio?

Hi @GrahamVRS

I ended up with a torn achilles tendon. Took some time to resolve.

I was disappointed when they moved from the longer floor mounted throttle (on older models) to the current set up.  Find it more uncomfortable on longer journeys especially when there is no where to rest your foot when on cruise

As a direct result of driving the car?? Slightly terrified now...

Do you still have the car @JonSIII ?

You could always get a 'flip pedal' as right leg amputees might get or those that need to use there left foot to drive automatics.

Just learn to drive that way.

Or try keeping your right leg out of the way and use your left foot on the standard position accelerator and brake.  'What is the worst that can happen?'

Resurrecting this thread as I've just moved from a vrs octavia to a kodiaq and I'm struggling as the accelerator is too soft - I was used to resting my foot on the vrs pedal, but no way I can do that on the kodiaq or I'd be flying everywhere!

Any ideas for making the accelerator pedal harder to press?!

I've started half resting my foot on the footwell next to the pedal, but it's not ideal.

Not exactly but maybe try moving seat back a bit so the part of your foot resting on the pedal is more towards the front of your foot, eg past the ball of your foot towards your toes.
