Strange Noise & Short Journey Issues

Featured Replies

Hello all,

Hoping someone can help on the below...

My car develops a misfire (jolt) which happens after a week of short 2 mile journeys to work only when the weather is cold (around 4C and below)... the misfire happens on idle and cruising at slow speeds - this only happens after short journeys and when the engine/coolant is up to temperature. To clear the misfire I normally have to give it a good pull normally find 2nd gear is best... after that it will be 100% fine until I go back to short journeys again and it repeats itself.

Yesterday when I got home from work I had gone a little further round to let the engine warm up and noticed the misfire... I ignored it and when I pulled up on my drive it was making a strange noise every 10 or so seconds from the turbo/back of the engine area... I filmed it for 1 or so minutes and afterwards revved the car a bit and afterwards it no longer made the noise. I can't make out what it is, or why the above happens on short journeys as i've had the 1.4 COD engine in two Audi's and had no issues and i'm sure the engines are nearly identical except capacity and different turbos.

My engine is 1.2 TSI 90BHP 2015 with 29k miles... it's not the dreaded chain driven early version that was riddled with issues.

Thank you in advance.

Obviously something is loose/slack/faulty, my wife has a 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 16V 110PS and it does not make any funny/nasty engine noises and it is at almost 20K miles. The only trouble that a few early units of that engine type 90 and 110PS output was that the variable inlet camshaft pulley started to come apart, I don't know what that sounds like, but I check that pulley on my wife's Polo every year - just in case.  Your noise hopefully is something less potentially damaging like a faulty AC compressor coupling or alternator pulley or aux belt tensioner, you should get this looked at asap, I would if I could not do that myself.

Edit:- also maybe a turbo wastegate issue.
