Warming up 1.5 TSI

Featured Replies

In winter whether is cold. Sometimes even -20. Should i warm up TSI engine or not? There are many different opinion on different engines.

?

What do you mean, warm up the coolant and engine oil?

Do not warm that up by having the car sitting idling.  A few miles driven even if the ambient temp is @ -20*oC & the coolant will heat up

and after maybe 10-15 miles that will have the engine oil towards an efficient temp.

?

What car do you have with the 1.5TSI and where are you?

I guess you mean by idling the engine to achieve coolant temperature?

On that basis NO! The engine will warm up much faster if driven, even at town speeds.

OTOH idling to get the ventilation going if you need to de-ice the windows will help, by softening the ice immediately in contact with the glass.

Going to take a while idling to get heat out of the vents to defrost the windows at -20*oC ambient temp.

Best have a heater in the car to do that.

& get driving ASAP.

Agreed, but it honestly doesn't take anything like as long to soften the ice against the screen so it scrapes easier. Been there, done that, got the sweatshirt...

Have you got a 1.5TSI & been defrosting it?

No (1.9TDi as stated) and yes.

Sorry i never saw where you stated what car you had just that you had the sweatshirt.

Having been to eastern europe a few times in below -20 deg weather, I can tell you, if a car has been parked outside, its just not possible to start and drive off immediately. Lots of defrosting and clearing to do.

At -20C even 0W-20  LL4 oil will be thick and viscous. Allowing a couple of minutes or more to allow the oil to circulate fully and heat up the initial 10-20 deg wouldn't go a miss. Bear in mind the 1.5tsi has a fully variable oil pump that varies pressure with engine speed and load. So flow rate may initially be low at those temps especially if you have thicker grade oil.

Fortunately 1.5 tsi has great thermal management if somewhat complex, it has iirc 3 thermostats and additionally when the engine is cold, water circulation to the block and head is reduced to virtually nil. Along with an integrated exhaust manifold, this means the water jacket heats up very quickly compared to older engines. And it is very quick.

The downside to idling after a cold start is it takes a little longer for the CAT to warm up and start working, and during this phase the mixture is rich, so possibility of some bore wash and petrol getting into the engine oil though its really only a small possibility as the 1.5tsi direct injection is state of the art.

My advice is, get in the car (which sometimes is a challenge), start the engine, don't rev it, turn on the rear window/mirror heating, front and seats too if you have them, the load on the engine will help warm it quicker. Refrain from full blast fan, I find a low speed directed to the window gets warmer air there quicker. Don't move off until your front/rear windows/mirrors are clear. Safety first.

Observe local laws, in the UK, the driver is not allowed to exit the car if its idling on a public road.

-20 deg and below in eastern europe can mean cars very heavily frosted, covered in snow etc etc, these conditions can persist for weeks, don't try and compare it to the beast from the east or tropical scotland.

Good luck opening the fuel cap to get the simply clever scraper!

Look left, where it says

"Location: Scotland

Car : Octavia TDi 110".

Use a smart phone, look left and what do you see?  Head for thinking, feet for dancing.

...and computer for surfing the Interwebnet.

From every Skoda manual, regardless of engine...
