Brake Fluid Warning

Featured Replies

My brake fluid warning light and beep came on this morning on my 2008 Octavia 4x4 Estate (1.9TDI). I know where the reservoir is to top up but in 4 years of driving different cars I've never had this happen before, so just wanted to check if there's anything I should know about topping it up or whether I can just fill it to the mark like screenwash etc. Do I need a particular type of brake fluid? I'll be going to Andrew Page.

Also - I've only had this car a month and a half but the service history shows regular servicing... should I be concerned that it's so low?

Cheers!

Yes just top up to mark with dot 4 brake fluid, don't get any fluid on the paint work as it will strip the paint very very quickly. Do have the brake's checked for any leaks as soon as possible, as under normal driving you should not loose any fluid.

Yes any fluid loss is a concern and must be checked out, brake are the most important safety feature on the car.

Agree with the above it would be a good idea to get a garage you trust have a look over the braking system. When was car moted last?

@alessio92 - I had this happen once on a hire car, and the garage I got the car from reported well worn brake pads.

Otherwise, as above, and top up from a new, sealed tin, then dispose of any left over.

Thanks everyone. Topped up and it was pinging again after 2 days and about 40 miles driven so have stopped driving it and booked it in.

It could just be the sensor is a bit dirty.  Try moving the float up and down the rod in the lid.  Also connect/disconnect the sensor wire

Turned out a Caliper was haemorrhaging brake fluid, so it’s been replaced. Cheers all!
