Another Wheel/Tyre Question

Featured Replies

I usually change to a set of winter tyres (Nokian) on 16” Skoda steel wheels with full trims for winter and change back to alloys with summer tyres in the Spring. Getting a bit older now so thinking of changing my summer tyres for Crossclimates  and selling the winter wheels/tyres.

Anyone know when it’s best to do this so I can realise some sales value for the winter wheels/tyres - in the Spring or wait till Autumn? Winter Nokians have 5mm tread left so plenty of wear any ideas on sales value and where to advertise them, collection only obviously.

Hmmm.

Let me think about that. Asking a Skoda forum where to advertise Skoda wheels. B)

BTW winter tyres have a lower wear line threshold (for winter use) so it might just pay you to wear them out.

Cold weather tyres start to lose their effectiveness once they reach 4mm, as per the info I got from Nokian.

You will obviously find it easier to sell winter wheels in the Autumn than Spring.

winter tyres come with 8 - 9mm of tread, at 5mm probably only good for one winter (as need 3 or 4mm min) so value not going to be that high

However if you are buying all seasons, there seem to be offers currently (excess stock after the winter ) if you shop around.   Tends to be less offers as approach colder months.

Thanks for the advice, I am in two minds because my current tyres (Goodyear Efficientgrips) are hardly worn so tempted to run them this summer then change in Autumn even if price of All Season tyres are bit higher. Other question, I suppose, is whether a set of Efficient Grips with 5-6mm tread are worth anything to anyone in the Autumn?

I've done the opposite: I now drive 2nd generation Goodyear Vector 4 Seasons on my 16" steelies all year round.  (OK, I haven't sold the 17" alloys with the Cinturatos that the car came with: they're still stacked in my garage at the moment.  If I sell the car within the next few years those will go back on.)

I got 16" wheels for my winter tyres in order to be able to use snow chains if the need should arise.  Hence why I have 205/55R16 tyres on the steelies.  (And no, having winter tyres does not necessarily eliminate the need for chains.  Not if you like to venture in to the remoter parts of the Scottish highlands in winter, like do.)

Both sets of wheels are 16" so the Efficient grips probably not saleable to Yeti owners who generally have standard 17" wheels.

I got the 16" alloy wheels as original equipment after getting Skoda(UK) to modify the dealer factory order. Done that twice now and Skoda were only too happy to help both times. I find 16" wheels with 60 profile tyres provide a more compliant ride - but I know others think otherwise.

If you put a For Sale ad in Briskoda people know if they want 16" wheels, they fit on other cars than just a Yeti.

Why?

My summer wheels are 17"

Winter wheels 16"

Both fit and have the same rolling diameter

Bit confused by your comments. What I was saying is that because my summer tyres (Goodyear Efficientgrip) are 16” they won’t be any use to the vast majority of Yeti’s which are on 17” summer wheels.

My winter wheel/tyres are also 16” and could be used by any Yeti owner because they are a direct replacement for summer 17” wheel/tyres.
