What oil should i use?

Featured Replies

I recently bought a Skoda Octavia RS 2006 that had been sitting for 6 months, so i figured its due for a service.

However, i'm very confused if i should be using 5W-30 or 5W-40 oil? Also, some oils specify "full synthetic" and others only say "synthetic". What should i pick?

Engine is BWA 2.0 TFSI with 174k miles

Hi Orman,

The Castrol website recommends either or. The only difference between a 5W-30 and a 5W-40 is that the 40 is going to be a bit more viscous (thick) at operating temperature. Chances are that it will be fine with either or, I wouldn't worry too much about it. You'll find that all oils will go as either a Mineral, Part synthetic, or Full synthetic. You'd want to stick with a full synthetic. If it doesn't mention whether it is a synthetic or not, then it's going to be a mineral. A full synthetic oil will however be mentioned as either (like you said) a "Full Synthetic or Synthetic".

If you're confused on what you should be using have a look at https://applications.castrol.com/oilselector.

Cheers!

If the 5w 40 Full Synthetic is to VW 502 it is for fixed service intervals,

& 5w 30 Full Synthetic is Long Life VW504/ 507 it is for Long Life / Variable servicing and Fixed Service intervals.

I would use VW502, so 5w 40 Full Synthetic.

VW502.00 spec as an entry point.  VW507.00 if you want something slightly better.  It will be written on the bottle.  Both are full synthetic.

We don't do variable service down here so it's "this is good and this is better".  If you have an oil burner then you haven't no choice but VW502 5w-40
