Windscreen washer pump

Featured Replies

Hi, my 2004 mk1 Windscreen washer pump is not working,  I checked the electrical wire , the positive wire is ok but the chassy or negative or earth wire is no signal,  who can help please

The earth/ground/negative is made via the stalk on the steering column

So I clean it with an electrical spray or change the whole unit,  when I press the for water the wipers move but the pump will not run.

@Namrouqa Well, if the wipers move when you trigger "wash", there is power to the wiper switch. By the sound of it you need to continuity check the cables from the switch to the washer pump, and from there to earth.

Does the pump run when you select the rear wiper ?

And that's why you can help us to help you more and more quickly if you fill in the "Location" field in your profile. Even just a nation gives us more data about available specifications, as does putting engine and trim level in "Car".

Try this:-

Unplug the electrical connection to the washer motor and run power from a loose battery straight to the pump.

Use two pieces of wire and connect up the right way round. If it works then the pump is OK.

If not then using wire connect up the positive ( which you say is live ) from the cars electrical connection.

Then try a second piece of wire to earth the pump to a different part of the car.

If this works then you are looking at a bad earth/broken wire from the pump onwards.

Thanks AG Falco

Thank you, I did the the pump test and it is ok, I have a bad earth wire which I can't find, am searching for a diagram to find the earth wire.

The Green/White wire is the earth side of the pump and that goes direct to the stalk switch on the steering column (Pin 5 of the 8 pin connector)  and that put's the ground to the pump, the ground is common to a lot of other functions, so the chances are if the wire isn't broken between the pump and the column switch it is the switch that is broken

I will check the column,  most probably it is the problem,  I will clean it and see what happens.

Thank you so much

Yesterday the high beam flash was stuck in ON position while I was driving,  the a SMOKE started from the unit,  I stopped the car and pulled the battery wires.

since I bought this car i had problems with electrics , like the Windscreen washer and the high beam flash.
