Brake master cylinder

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Forgive my ignorance as I'm a noob with octavias. I've looked through some posts but can't find the info I'm looking for so my apologies if I've missed it. I'm getting brake fluid dripping off the back of the pedal so I'm assuming the master cylinder needs the seals renewed? Are all the master cylinders on the octavias the same? Can anyone tell me which seal kit I need as there seems to be a few and I don't want to strip it down to discover I've got the wrong kit and be off the road. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Also another little question if I may, are sump pans specific to each engine type? I have a 1.9 tdi bkc engine, I serviced it recently and noticed a little crack in the sump so it needs changing. Are the aftermarket sumps any good? Thanks for any help you can give me.

I think there are a couple of MC types fitted, it's an ATE brand on mine which has internal bore seals, good luck replacing them!

Save a MC from the crusher buying used, same with sump, or have it welded.

If the crack isn't structural, clean well with brake cleaner and apply RTV.

Thanks for the reply, bar stripping it out is there any way to find out which type it is? I would rather replace the seals if I can, I could get a second hand one but then if the seals are nearly worn in that I'm not gaining anything, just more work. It's just identifying the correct seal kit before I strip it all out. The sump is cracked around the plug, someone has overtightened it in the past, not sure if it can be welded. I'm probably going to get a second hand sump but has anyone got any experience of the aftermarket ones?

You could peek around the MC with an inspection mirror and torch to see if you can make out manufacturer's logo.

As I said the ATE version fitted on mine has a solid aluminium piston which travels in the body of the MC which has the seals fitted internally.

Even if you could get the seals, the replacement would be some feat of surgery and the piston would likely need replacing.

In my experience I've not seen used items leaking.

RTV the sump and forget about it.
