Physical key switch for front door locks question

Featured Replies

Hi all.

Quick question about the physical key locks for the front doors.

Does anyone one know if they are a physical cable or other physical mechanism that locks and unlocks the door ?

Or it is is just a electronic switch that is activated by the key ?

reason I ask is my car has an intermittent fault with the shifter mechanism where it doesn’t see the shifter in park.

When this error happens, I am unable to lock the car. The key remote, the button on the door and the physical key in the lock all do not work. The key refused to turn and I didn’t feel like forcing it.

The remote and button both had no effect.

the car is finally booked in to my rather hopeless dealer in hopes they can fix it.

Just wondered why the physical key wouldn’t lock either.

Jason.

I've locked a car up with the battery removed, okay not a Fabia but an Ibiza, so yes, the physical key does lock the driver's door lock in the same way as it would if that car did not have central locking or remote central locking, you must always have that ability to secure a car if the battery etc has failed - but as your car intermittently is behaving as though the gearbox is not in Park, then that will probably be stopping/blocking you locking the car as that function is being blocked, the resistance to the physical key in the driver's door lock is curious - I would have expected it to be able to rotate the key as normal but the other doors would not lock and as soon as you released that physical key the driver's door lock would unlock.

Hi,

I've had the same problem with the DSG shifter and they have replaced the whole mechanism three times so far. It always lasts about 6 months and then starts getting errors again.

My neighbour has the same car, one month older than mine (manufactured 04/2017) and he's had the same fault once as well.

It's a fault with the design - insist it to be taken care of and be prepared for returning faults...

I've had my car towed to the dealers every time because it was impossible to lock the car just the way you said. I insisted a courtesy car from the dealer for the duration of the repairs (1st time 3 weeks, no parts in Finland and had to place a back order to the factory. Other 2 times 1 week each).

These faults are my main reason for not getting a Skoda again although the Fabia is a nice car to drive. I just can't have the car leaving me on the road as I drive a lot on business.

Thanks.

I have the car car booked in at the dealer next week for them to look at it.

They will give me a loan car while they have mine.

Hopefully they will will replace the shifter. I doubt it will be fixed on the day though.

This dealer appears to be not the greatest when it comes to after sales support.

The car is only about 6 months old. It has only 7,500km too.

Jason.

If anyone gets caught out with this problem, until you can get the dealer to collect the car, just disconnect the battery, lock the driver's door with the physical key then lock each of the remaining doors by removing the rubber plug with the padlock symbol moulded into it and use the physical key or another similarly shaped tool to flick the remaining opened doors locked then close these doors.
