Who is paying for all this infrastructure and subsidised or even free electricity, not to mention the free parking?

I have the distinct feeling it's me and I don't even have an EV/PHEV 😠

That's the way taxation works. 😉

  • Not sure why you have posted a diatribe about EVs on a thread about Scottish EV charging but hey ho.   The Lithium for most EVs is sourced from large open cast mines and only a tiny fraction

  • most of the destination chargers here (ie you have to use your own cable) are 22kw.  My leaf can only charge at 6kw on these but cars like the zoecan use the full 22. The new VW ID will do 11 as I und

Whoever pays for the car parks to be built, and car park operator. That's for the <7kW chargers. (eg. supermarkets, workplaces, household driveways, etc)

43 kW and faster rapid chargers should be paid for by charging network operators (see Gridserve, BP Pulse, etc) or car manufacturers (see Tesla, Ionity)

Only the early experimental ones installed by the council are paid by tax payer money. They are unreliable due to being early units and poorly maintained. Going forward there shouldn't be any more.

@xman  Are you now a resident in Scotland paying the Scottish Tax Codes or Council Tax or the electric electric tariffs, sugar tax, minimum pricing on alcohol etc ?

If so then you maybe are paying towards Scotland's drive to lower emissions.

People who never venture out of Scotland or travel by train might feel they are paying for HS2 and Nuclear Power Stations to be built.

@wyx087Many of the 32 Local Authorities have new EV Charging hubs in the planning and under construction on Publicly owned / common good land and these are with the latest chargers and not just 7/22 or 43/50 kW chargers.

Some nice ones about now. They are part of the Charge Place Scotland Network and paid for by Council Tax Payers.

Thankfully I do not live in Scotland but some idiot labour polician decided that England giving massive amounts of free money to Scottish governments continually and in perpetuity was a good idea.

Free money that I have to fund.

In recent years, Barnett himself has called it a "terrible mistake".

@xman I doubt your tax payments in your lifetime pay enough to cover what you get from taxation where you are let alone any of it getting to Scotland.

You have a few years left to get NHS treatment and care, policing and defence and all the rest.

Same can be said for car parks without electric charging?

The electric chargers and electric are paid for by those using them. They charge a fee to plug in and a fee per kWh.

Oh and we probably all pay in tax, but save in tax spent on healthcare. Don’t forget all the nasty effects on the brain and cancer that have a possible link to things in fuel.

The Free to charge at CPS chargers are not being paid for by those using them other than by their taxes.

The Free to use at Supermarkets are being paid for by Supermarket customers and the person charging their EV might not be one of those.

I no longer charge using my local council chargers and will not unless in an emergency i needed a full battery to set off someplace and there was not a reliable properly quick charger on the way.  I might go to InstaVolt less than 1/2 a mile away and Pay more because i will get a proper speed of charge there.

If i have to get anyplace over about 60 miles quickly because of family emergencies and i have an ICE vehicle available then no way would i take an EV in winter.

If only councils in England have similar forward thinking capabilities. Barnet, my council, was the ONLY one in greater London to opt-out of no engine idling campaign. 🤮

There definitely need to be SOME tax payer's money to kick start the switch to a less polluting form of transport. Early on, it was ill conceived grants pay a tiny amount of tax payer's money into individual's pockets, eg those who can afford new cars and have driveways.

But on the other hand, if we remove all fossil fuel subsidies........ invest that huge amount of tax payer's money into the public charging infrastructure......

'Aim to double Scotland's electric vehicle charging network'.

http://bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-60141379

50 million quid of public money spent so far.

30 million more in the next 4 years or so.

If the Scottish Labour MSP had brains he would be dangerous.

Why bother? The actual problem is that private transport on demand (own car and taxi/private hire) is too ubiquitous.

The reason seams to be that in 8 years time the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles is to stop and people will still want to be getting about from far and wide and to where they want. There will even be electric hearses.

If there is to be a ban on people owning cars then no issue really when they can not buy new cars only used ICE ones

Lots of people can not afford to uses Taxis/ Private hire cars or trains or busses to transport themselves or a family.

Sometimes I just sit and sometimes I sit thinking.   So since 2011 in Scotland about £50 million has been spent on Public EV chargers and CPS.     5.5 million people in Scotland.   So maybe £9 per person over that period in time.  Less than £1 a year.      If we think of the cost of the New Queensferry Crossing which many will never use but their goods are crossing that gives a per person cost comparison.   £1.35 billion.  That is useful for Scottish citizens, visitors, business and commerce and the Economy.  Just like Public EV charging.

More chargers being installed at Broxden Park & Ride Charging Hub Perth.

Including Rapid chargers which is great, so as long as they are kept properly maintained and promptly repaired if out of service & not sitting broken as one Rapid did for over a year.

Good. MfG seem to be one of the better providers of EV charging. They get that a single charger don't cut it and some weather protection would be nice. The one in Stretford, Manchester looks great.

They also listen to customers, when users complained the charging cables were too short, they fitted longer cables and adopted that as their standard. I look forward to trying out the one at Crow Orchard if needed on a trip North.

And so Scotland aren't left out of the year end rush to install new chargers, FastNed have announced a new 8x300kW hub in Hamilton.

Yeah, lots of places to eat while you're charging.

@KenONeill preferable to being at a park and ride near a main route or motorway where there are no toilets or anything else other than buses to get on.  So there are places to eat at if that is your thing, or there is doing your shopping, going to the cinema, golfing, walking, cycling, horse riding etc etc.  I am in Dunblane charging and the food and drink came with me as I had to drive through snow to get to the rain.  I have never used an eatery while charging other than if buying in a supermarket.  I drive an EV to save money to have money to spend on stuff when I get to destinations and not to help fast food places stay busy.

PlugShare shows that Shell in Forfar so Fiskens filling station is getting 2 X 50 /150 kW chargers and that will be 49 pence a kWh.   I though that the big new Shell Filling Station with coffee and fastfood outlets  out near the A90, & near KFC,McD, Marston and the CPS charging hub  would have Shell  chargers installed by now.

There will be penty choices now from 3.6/7-150kw chargers and from free-50 pence a kWh.   23, 49 & 50 pence a kWh.

With InstaVolt. Recharge-Shell, CPS, PodPoint, BP Pulse & @ Kia & Ford Dealerships.

(Not all 7 kW charger locations available show here.)

Edinburgh City Council / Councillors must be off their heads.

35 pence a kWh on Charge Places Scotland Public Chargers are one thing but a 30 minutes max charging time and then a £30 overstay fine will not work for Taxi's, Hybrids Taxis,

Commercial drivers / Trades People with EV's. Or many of the Public including people just passing through Edinburgh and needing a charge.

Edinburgh Council even gave contracts to Trades but required they had EV's.

Now people are arriving at chargers and not aware of the 30 minutes & some have charged as usual in the past days and stayed the hour or whatever they need to charge for their work.

The 22kW Chargers are a 3 hour stay at Edinburgh Airport & the 7kW are 12 hours and 25 pence a kWh.

No idea elsewhere as the 3 sites i was at only showed the 35 pence and 30 minutes.
