Fabia 1.9tdi cutting out on start up

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a concern regarding the engine occasionally cutting out immediately after starting.  It starts immediately, but cuts out within a second or so. It does this on occasion 3 times(by chance I think) and then it starts and behaves normally.  It stops immediately when the ignition is turned off. It has started doing this randomly over the past few weeks.

I am thinking that perhaps there is a fuel cut off valve in the system somewhere starting to stick that I could replace before it jams completely.

Thank you

Nigel

This could well point more to the transponder chip in the key not being properly recognised by the reader coil round the ignition switch. If you have a spare good key try using that one instead and see if it still happens. A scan with VCDS should also show a fault code referencing transponder or immobiliser fault. Can be due to the wiring of the reader coil degrading so that might affect all keys.

The RFID chip is not powered so changing keys won't help, it could be the reader coil but if the immobiliser is allowing the car to be started then restarted I suspect the fuel cutoff solenoid in the injection pump or the wiring to it.

Immobiliser issue or a fuel issue e.g air ingress, tired/faulty lift pump (if applicable)

Could be if he has a VE pump supplied engine but I was thinking PD probably. I changed the fuel cutoff solenoid on a neighbours seat alhambra a few weeks ago but it had logged a fault code and I had an old VE pump in the shed to rob it from. My 15 minutes of fame in the street but sadly not followed by fortune.

You're quite right, there was I thinking it was an SDI, injector loom seems more likely in that case.

I cannot find any such valve on ebay, can anyone have a link?

Thank you

Nigel

Can you say what engine. I know it is 1.9TDI but is is a Pumpe Duse or VE. Engine identification letters are often on the cambelt cover and on the sticker on the boot floor under the mat. PD engines don't have a fuel shutoff solenoid.

Try with the spare key. Some transponder chips seem weaker than others or slightly differently positioned in the key body. 1.9 TDI's of this vintage behave just as you describe if they don't get a signal from the transponder. You may see the immobiliser light on the dash flash in these circumstances.

Scroll down this thread. If your engine is VE you have a pump like this one on the front of your engine. This pump does have valves. https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/465224-sdi-sudden-loss-of-power/?page=1

I think the Fabia TDIs were all PD units. Not seen a non-PD 1.9TDI.

@OP, best first step is to get the car scanned for fault codes.

Thank you for all your help.

I think it has passed now, with no recurrence since my posting.  I did ask a Green Flag guy that said that it was probably debris in the system and that it tends to go away(back into the tank perhaps!

I also asked about an issue with a the headlights that has just occurred.  I now have only the front fog and side lights working properly.  The main and dip work either one side or not at all, quite random, although I have been getting through an excessive amount of main/dip bulbs over the past 6 months, say 6 in total.

He suggested the dip/main stalk as the problem.  I have ordered one, but any other ideas?

Thank you

Nigel

^ The main light switch being faulty is also a possibility.

Try looking at your crank shaft sensor mine was doing this and cutting out when I was driving changed it no problems after that
