Multi Function Display Partial Crash

Featured Replies

Hello all. I really hope you can help where two service centres have... not. I have an Octavia Elegance (2013). For about 18 months, the Sat Nav/MFD unit intermittently crashes. It seems to at random - turning on/off every few minutes in week, and then operating well after that. The MFD still works, the Sat Nav can be turned ack in, but the steering shell doesn’t work, Bluetooth goes, and no Sat Nav in the MFD. It very often chooses to work well when I take it to a service centre. I have spent about £300 on investigations and theoretical fixes, but no joy. There was an update completed of cars software recently, and this was supposed to have fixed it - but not so. Has anyone got any idea? I guess it doesn’t show up a clear error in the diagnostics. I’d like to think it was as simple as a loose connection, but not sure this fits with the facts?? So... help!!

Have a hard time following the fault scenario, can you re-write it in a list form of what works always, and what works intermittent.
Maybe it's just me not being good enough in eng, but for me it would help to understand the issue better.

Things that works most of the times but not sometimes usually are bad connections. Where is the million £ question though.

Thanks for the reply & good point! Basically, everything works some of the time. It can then have a period of time (days, weeks) when the sat nav/compass/phone element turn off, and this then crashes the Sat Nav with it. Sat Nav unit can be turned back on, but this isn’t ‘picked up’ in the display in the multi function display. The phone won’t connect, nor will any Bluetooth stuff. It can then randomly come back on, but can crash again moments later. Every time, if the MFD Bluetooth/Sat Nav crashes, it turns off the ‘main’ sat nav too. When it isn’t working, the MFD will display trip computer as normal, and time etc, but just state that the compass/audio etc ‘isn’t available’. If SatNav is manually restarted after the MFD crashes, the Sat Nav will then need to be turned off independently of the ignition.

Cant help thinking this is a more confusing explanation!

Got easier for me, thanks.

Don’t have any remedy for it though.

It’s different units that talk on can, one of the units probably have a bad earth or damage cable/connector.

should be some fault in the logs, or at least if they sniff the can messages it can be picked up. This regardless if the system is running atm or not.

Can’t imagine that the system is stable even when your system is running normal, it just isn’t bad enough to shutdown, easiest is ofc to do it when you have the faults going.

Firmware update

Thanks- I’m told that service centre did an update, and when I check by entering my VPN into Skoda, that one isn’t needed. Therefore one isn’t made available to download. Any idea where/how I source a current firmware update (I guess I could do it via SD card?)

As above, firmware update or if it’s a diesel one I have my old vRS gauges from my car before the VC was fitted for sale. They are on eBay but PM me and we can come up with something if you are interested. They worked perfectly for me and the colour cluster never crashed in my ownership. You would need to find someone to code it in and correct the mileage.

I had this on MIB1, but the firmware update was main dealer only. Sorted the issue though
