Subwoofer installation with original stereo

Featured Replies

Hi!

I registered here almost a year ago, but life's been somewhat busy, so I haven't got to writing this first post until now. Anyways.. I have a Skoda Fabia Mk II -14 with the original stereo which I believe is called the Swing. I think the sound is ok (I'm not as picky these days), but I would love to install a subwoofer as it would "lift" the whole system. I've done some very basic research and it seems that the head unit has no form of line output and that it has all amplification built into it, so I guess I would have to use a line level converter (or whatever the correct term is). But if so, where would I best tap into the speaker outputs? I'm guessing there are no factory options for speakers behind the rear seats and hence no pre routed cables in the boot I could connect a converter to? And how would I connect the amplifiers power remote? Is there even a suitable output on the head unit for that?

How would you go about it? Any and all ideas are welcome. But, I want to keep the original radio and I really don't want to cut or modify original cables (more than absolutely necessary).

Thank's in advance!

Ive done  quite a few mods to the sound and found initially that wiring 2 rear speakers to the parcel shelf and shifting the 'balance' of the music from 'Front to Rear' was enough for a good few years whilst other mods were pursued. Had to get an car audio firm to wire from original stereo. The power output is quite good.

Also wired with Quick Release fitting so i can still remove parcel shelf if need be.

This was cheapest option, only 6 years later did i add a new android stereo then a subwoofer from the android unit.

That is a really neat installation! How did you sort the power remote? My plan (if I ever get the time) is to splice the rear speaker leads just before they head off to the rear doors and then route cables to a converter in the boot. Then there is the problem of power to the amp. I'm not really keen on routing a cable all the way from the fuse box to the boot. Ten years ago, no problem, but not sure I could be bothered these days. Forgive me for thinking this, but I'm not going for a lot of power here, so I'm having thoughts of splicing the supply to the rear 21 mm power socket. Problem is it will probably only me 1,5 mm2 at best, but it would be so easy.. We'll see. Also depends on how I sort the power remote for the amp. If I have to route a cable all the way from the stereo, I might as well do a 6 mm2 cable to the amp at the same time.

And sorry for really late reply, combination of being busy and really poor memory..

Kobayashi's job looks very similar to the old Toyota Yaris way of fitting rear speakers.  Toyota had extra speaker ports on the audio system, I just had to pop it out, connect the loom, run that through the car via the door sills, under the carpet, etc, fit the speakers into the shelf and Bob's your auntie's hubby!

I think they ran from the drivers side, rather then passenger/nearside but very similar, right down to the plug connector!

It was a proper Toyota setup though so it may be that you have no actual plug in facility on the back of the audio system.

It's simple to do.....

Because there is no lineout on the factory headunit, you have to convert the speaker output to an RCA input, so you need something like this....

Then, unless you want to install a seperate amp, the easiest way is an active sub enclosure, so something like this....

You don't "need" a remote turn on fromt he headunit, you could simply use an igniton live to do it.......but you WILL need a decent power supply to the amp.......Infact, the enclosure above even takes high inputs as well, so you dont even need the converter AND it comes with a wiring kit....could not be easier.

The power output from the original skoda dance / swing is quite good, the original installer told me not to bother with my fliptop pioneer from my corsa.

I didnt do any of the wiring but it works independently of the amp / subwoofer, wired to the ignition.

One thing if you still want to take out the parcel shelf to fold the rear seats then you want some 'quick release fittings'

The subwoofer BASS  volume has no remote so to speak but was 'wired' underneath the stereo.
