Anyone know how to check what pads you need before purchase? Looking online there is PR ZA or LA to choose from for my car. 

If you look on the options sticker in the boot then use a decoder you can see what is fitted.

 

The 190 uses 1KU rear discs and 1ZA front discs

It says la but I've tried them and the pad wasn't big enough for the caliper

What engine size?

 

Did you use the decoder?

1.6 diesel. Yeah used the decoder off the vag site. It only tells you the rears on that though

Mine listed the front and rear size, I used it to buy the brakes from Euro Car Parts and they were spot on.

Did you have a look onto an online ETKA?

Click on "Welcome Safe zone > fre services > CarProg2"

Then fill the drop down menu the brand / model / year... Module 6 (Wheels, brakes), should help you finding the OEM reference.

 

With, 1.6 TDI, it should be option code PR-1ZA : OEM reference for front brake pads is then 8V0698151B. (Note, this should be 2nd mount reference, since it's a different reference than the 1st mount reference, that I've just been checking 5Q0 615115AH)

 

One of the OEM manufacturer for the pads is TRW. I don't know who can be other(s) one(s)...

Cheers for this massive help. I got them wrong first time. Little concerned the sticker on the car and book both say LA on them and it looks like there actually ZA/ZE

@SpeedyB79 PR-1LA, seems to be dedicated to the TSI280 version. 

Indeed, PR-1ZA has 312 mm front brake discs, whereas RP-1LA hase 340 mm ones.
