Intermittent flashing glow plug light and faults 1.6tdi

Recommended Posts

I have an issue that the glow plug warning light started flashing, will clear if you turn off and restart the engine, it then threw up and EML.  Only did it after the car got warm (8 mile) and came on when crawling through stop start traffic.

Had the faults read P0101 and P0236 by VAG specialist, drove the car around as usual for another 2 or 3 days and now the glow plug light comes on every 3rd or 4th journey but on 1 occasion  the car went into limp mode I assume as it wouldn't; rev much above 2K.  Also I've noted that the car runs lumpy at anything below 1500 rpm and you have to drop into a lower gear but then it's fine.

Garage said first thing to try is for me to do a regen which I've been told to take to for a 15-20 mile drive and keep it at 2000 rpm, does this sound like it could solve the problem or am I looking at something more serious. It hasn't had the emissions fix done, mileage on car is 52000 and it's a 12 plate.

Ideas?

Thanks

How long have you had this car? - I ask this in case you have the opportunity to return the car if recently purchased.

Are you doing mostly short journeys?

A 20 mile run will help, but be prepared for more of the same in the future. There are hundreds of posts on this particular issue, BUT, do not consider getting the emissions update done.

I bought it privately about a month ago so no chance of a return.  I wouldn't say it's all short journeys but there are some 4 mile each way trips to the supermarket a couple of times a week.  I have 2 members of my family that have this engine in a Golf and an Ibiza and they haven't had any issues and I would say our usage profile is very similar.

P0101 is MAF sensor giving implausible reading while P0236 is listed as variously as MAP ( manifold air pressure ) sensor and turbo boost pressure.

Before spending any money have a good look at all the hoses for splits and at the joints for leaks. Look too at the air filter, the installation of it, the seal for the cover and that the cover is properly fitted.

I had P0101 come up three times last year but only on overrun. Twice in a couple of days and once about 6 weeks later. It did not cause limp mode though.

After the first two my local VAG specialist wanted to change the MAF sensor and quoted just over £200. Since no symptoms at all I have left it as across the various VAG forums there are several cases of replacing the sensor but the P0101 fault still occurring. If the fault becomes regular then I will get the sensor replaced so if not the fault it will be obvious.

Mine occasionally throws up a p0101 in the last few weeks, no limp mode and no difference in economy or performance. Mine has had dieselgate done, I removed the maf transformer not long after I got the car. Unless its something to do with the leaky exhaust thats getting sorted soon I dont know whats causing mine. It goes away after restarting the car and the code is easily cleared. Can come on toddling about town or on a big run like I did Sunday.
