Unusual sidelight problem.

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, hope one of you clever people can help me.

I retrofitted a new headlight switch which has the automatic headlights function,

It seems to work well but there is now an issue with the sidelights and tail lights,

With the switch in the sidelights position neither they or the tail lights or dashboard illumination function.

All come on in the headlights position and they come on in auto mode.

The parking lights function also works correctly.

I refitted the original switch to see if it was an issue with the new switch but the same happens.

Has anyone got any ideas how to fix this?.

Many thanks in advance.

You’ve blown fuse 17 it should be a 5amp change it for a 7.5 one

Thank you, I will go and change it .

I have heard some people need to upgrade a fuse but it was fine on mine. The only difference I have is that the sidelight function of having the indicator stalk either left or right, to operate that sidelight, key removed, now operates BOTH sides, regardless of if left or right. Cant say I care as I never use it. I think it is a PITA function anyway. My brother used to get caught out by the same thing on an older Vauxhall Calibra and ended up with a flat battery on a few occasions. (Prat).

Maybe a PITA but something i use often & have done since i started driving if in a Lay-by near the side of busy roads, or bigger ones / rest stops where HGV's etc pull into.

One Rear sidelight and registration plate bulb or 2, and a front sidelight at least gives some warning more than just 2 rear reflectors and a registration plate.

(The UK Highway code lets you know when Parking Lights should be used.)

Yeah but you get "Normal" Sidelights, its just the indicator stalk, one sided one I find  PITA or at least, my brother used to. He'd stupidly forget to cancel the indicator and leave the car, leaving it on. If you switch the main switch to sidelights, as per norm, you tend to notice easier. The downfall here, is that it uses all the lights so greater drain but I have LED bulbs anyway so the drain is minimal.Generally though, turn off what you turn on and you'll be ok!

Turns out that in my car fuse 17 is not fitted and it was fuse 35 which had failed.

Everything works perfectly now, I don't often use the parking lights function but they were checked as part of the troubleshooting process.

How does retrofitting automatic light switch work without fitting a light sensor ?

Or am I missing something ??

My Astra has auto lights, with no off function, absolute pita !!!....

It is a replacement switch with a light sensor built in.

You swap them over and feed the light sensor round to bottom of the windscreen.

I originally wanted a switch with the front fog light option but the automatic switch was half the price.

Foglight option is the issue... Some models have no front fogs, just the rear so if you fit that, you will need to find all sorts of bits and bobs to fit fogs, too. If you fit the rear only to a vehicle that should have front fogs, you won't be able to turn them on, unless you find away of turning them on with rear one. I have a nice one, with chrome trim, I think from a Yeti. (Be aware too, many are lit red, not green).

I assume DarrenG meant he was going to replace a switch but the auto option was cheaper then a genuine Skoda part, so saved cash and had extra function. Win-Win!
