Thinking of buying Superb

Featured Replies

Hi I am thinking about geting a Superb 1.4 petrol estate, but I am conserned that the engine will not be powerful enough can anyone give me there comments please.

Many Thanks.  Alan

It's a fine engine, smooth and quick, no need to be concerned unless you travel 4 up fully loaded a lot.

I find it fine for everyday driving. It's very smooth and quiet. It has a surprising amount of shove for such a small engine. Of course the 280 brigade will say it lacks top end acceleration and I would agree with them but it suits me fine.

I have test driven both the 1.4 and 2.0 220. If you are not after a fast car, the 1.4 is absolutely fine. I just didn't want less HP than I was used to in my V70 and got the 220 :-)

Depends what you’re used to. It’s a good engine but I personally feel it’s better suited to a smaller, lighter car.

I tried one back-to-back with a 150 TDI and found the TDI better suited to the Superb.

Performance is not everything. The petrol is so much more refined than the diesel. Makes it feel like a much more premium car. Whisper quiet at idle and at speed.

Agreed on that. I thought my Superb 150 TDI was refined until I got into a 220/280.  You even feel the difference through contact points.

Though I did find the TDI became really clattery after it had covered 10k miles. When new, it was much quieter/smoother.

Buy the 1.4 for the lighter fuel consumption. The 220 and above are not efficient cars. Arguably maybe more fun to drive? But that's not everyone's brief.

Good comment regarding the refinement/premium feel especially when comparing against the TDI and in the winter the petrol car is warmer much much quicker than the TDI.

I shared a similar dilemma two years ago. I plumped for the 1.4 Petrol and have not looked back.

More than enough power for what I need and we regularly have it loaded to the brim.

It lacks top end acceleration.

Use it to get to 70 quicker :)

I'm another 1.4tsi DSG estate owner with nearly 10000 miles on the clock with no regrets. More than adequate for everyday driving - just need to get use to stopstart or turn it off!
