Break pad wear sensor

Featured Replies

Hi, I recently noticed a red warning light for abs air bag and occasionally got a amber light for brake pad wear sensor, from what I found out is that all of these things are in one sensor which is brake pad wear sensor. Now I found tutorial how to replace a plug on that sensor but I don't know the serial number of that part. Is there anyone who tried doing that recently and knows the serial number? My skoda it's a fabia mk2 2009, 1.4 tdi and it's a front passenger side sensor. Thanks a lot.

Wear sensor is built into the inner pad.  Would need to know some PR codes for your car to tell you the part number for the pad set.

Can probably be found among the various item 15s on this page: https://skoda.7zap.com/en/cz/fabia/fab/2009-608/6/615-615016/

1J0698151D or 1J0698151E, I should think, but you may not find the 1LQ or 1LR codes on your options sticker to tell which is right, as front brake codes are often not on there.

Hi, thanks for help, it actually worked for the brake pad wear sensor, but my abs light and air bag light is still on, also my handbrake started feeling very 'weak' recently,  is it just a coincidence or those three things are connected?

We have sensors?

@Kasperkasper

So what about the Front Pads and the rear pads or shoes and wear, is there plenty of meat on them, has the brake fluid had a change anytime in the past few years and is the parking / hand brake cables OK.

No connection I can think of, other than possibly low battery, and then that wouldn't affect the handbrake function to the best of my knowledge.

Does the battery light come on when you switch on the ignition (before starting the engine)?

Maybe, maybe not. What's the PR code for the servicing regime it was sold under (on the boot sticker, something like QG0, QG1)?

Only cars that can be on variable servicing will have the brake pad wear sensor(s), I believe.

If there's a code like 9U0 or 9U1 that would be specifically referring to the presence (1) or absence (0) of the brake pad wear sensor, but I'm not sure whether that code will be on the sticker, lots of the codes aren't there.

I’ve never seen a single brake pad sensor on a mk2 fabia

There's not much to look at TBH, just a brake pad with a short bit of wire coming out of it, and a connector on the end.

yeah i know you get pads with sensors but theres nothing on the car to plug them into.

You need to look at a 2009 1.4TDI to be sure to be sure.

Then knowing which country the car was exported to might help.

VW group don't tend to fit wiring for items that aren't specced/fitted at build time.

The OP's car seems like it was built for it, yours seems like it wasn't.

Hi, thanks for replying,  front brake pads are fresh I done them myself I had to replace wear sensor as mine was cracked but I thought that abs sensor is actually built in to wear pad. Anyways, brake pad light doesn't come on anymore so that's good, abs air bag and handbrake are the issues, handbrake itself after taking rear tray inside the car looks wonky,  one side is pulling wire more than the other, for abs and airbag I'm gonna get some cheap code reader,  can you recommend anything ? Thanks a lot.

Oh and I don't know when brake fluid has been changed...

At the very least you want to check the H20 Content in the Brake fluid using a tester or test kit,

but best change the brake fluid if you do not know the history.

When your car was built it was the Manufacturers guidelines at 2 years then each 2 years, and then a few years later that changed to first at 3 years then each 2 years.

The very least is a test of the Brake Fluid IMO, as the guidelines or recommendations are kind of to cover world wide and different environments.

If the equaliser link near the handbrake lever is tilted over to one side, that means that you need to sort out the rear brakes which I suspect are disc brakes, sometimes one piston would get wound out too much - or is just seized.

Edit:- on any wheels with brake wear indicators fitted, you will find 2 separate cables, 1 for brake wear indicator and 1 for ABS as they are completely separate items/functions. The main cable going to that wheel will possibly be a single cable, I've forgotten, then it branches into two individual cables nearer the hub.

Or if they are drums on the rear, it could be the traditional problem of one of the handbrake levers inside the drum seizing on its pivot.

@Kasperkasper, you didn't answer my question about the battery light?

I think I'll take it to the garage for some point to get that brake fluid changed I don't think I'm capable of doing it myself,  the battery light is on when I switch ignition on , can It be connected to my problems with abs and air bag ? Is it a fuse do you think ? My rear brakes are drum brakes, if the wire is jammed can I do it myself,  what's your opinion guys ?

How long have you had the car, & how many miles has it done and how many since the last MOT, or last Service & Maintenance?

Sorry but no idea who or where you are or what skills or tools you have, but best not mess about with brake systems if you are not sure.

Changing Pads and Shoes is one thing, but as you have not had the rear drums off to look at things and are unfamiliar with the car i would get a mechanic to check things out.

I had this 2 years now, last year in March I had a full service done and I drove around 5k miles since that.

I think I'll have to take it to the garage,  my skills are very basic when it comes to mechanics and I haven't got tools for it either...

Sorry for double posting

No idea what a 'Full Service' is where you go to,

Main Dealers would be an Oil & Filter change, maybe a Cabin / Pollen Filter, maybe an Air Filter, maybe some lubing of locks, some looking and seeing,

maybe a road test and a Free Wash & Vacuum,

Brake servicing costs extra, as do brake fluid changes or anything really.

A good independent doing servicing & maintenance on steering, brakes etc is a good idea if you know of a good independent.

That is how it should be. If it doesn't come on at that time, it can be useful information about a charging system fault. This in turn (if there had been such a fault) might have caused the battery to be low on charge.

I was wondering if the battery might be the problem, because the ABS module and Airbags module can often be among the first to 'complain' if the voltage of their supply is too low.

Does the battery look like it might be the original one that the car was built with? You can often tell because it will have a VW group part number on the top, and maybe a date sticker or code.

The pivot inside the drum that I think might be jammed is the one in the red circle here. It seems to be a common fault caused by corrosion, and means that the handbrake cable can no longer move the  metal lever coming down from that point.  When it happens on one side, it makes the adjuster inside the car do this:

Hi, little update,  I took it to the garage, handbrake wire was stuck on the drum and they fixed it in like 10 minutes,  and I had a broken abs sensor on passenger side front wheel, from what mechanic said it was a abs and airbag sensor in one. Cost of fix was £125 and that's with mot so I'm happy. Thanks for help and advice.
