Columbus MIB1 to MIBII upgrade help/advice

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

Firstly my apologies if this has already been covered and if it has I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction.  Instead of going for the aftermarket stereo upgrade I wanted to stay OEM this time around so thought I follow the upgrade path to an MIBII unit.  I have an MY13 (Feb 2014 Registered) 5E0919606 8" display with a 5E0035020B MIB1 base unit, I have fitted a MIBII unit from a Skoda Superb Estate 2017 model 3v0035020B.  Everything was working before the Component Protection was removed, since having the component protection removed neither the Satnav, Traffic, Voice or phone now work.  The message I receive when I press the Satnav button is 'The navigation data in the infotaiment system is not valid. please check data'.  On further investigation with the developer mode activated I can see that some of the FEC/SWaP codes are showing as "temporarily rejected" and are still associated with the donor car as indicated by the VIN number being displayed.  I have researched a few other forums regarding these errors and have found replies which suggest the codes have to be disassociated with the donor car and then programmed with my VIN before they will activate and this is something the person who removed the component protection should have done.  I have taken it back to see if he could rectify the missing features but he says he is stumped.   So if anyone can help my questions are:-

  • Since the MIBII unit was functioning before the component protection was removed, if correctly programmed with the FEC/SWaP codes, shouldn't it all be working now?
  • Are Part Numbers 5E0 919 606 and 3V0035020B are fully compatible?
  • Is the reason some features are unavailable because of the age difference between the donor car and mine, although saying that they were working previously?
  • Would I have to get the unit 'custom' programmed to enable it to work?
  • The USB port has also been upgrade although I understand Mirror Link will still not work?

Any help and thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks

Once the FeC’s are disassociated, the unit needs a patch write to the motherboard and possibly some hardware changes to work in the car. It’s normal for these features to be lost during MIB swaps. Your radio and screen are fully compatible and there is no reason MirrorLink won’t work once all of the coding has been done. I started with a MIB1 Bolero, went to MIB2 Amundsen with Columbus screen and I now have a MIB2 Columbus modded to MIB2.5 spec running the 9.2 inch screen. My radio features all work as they should :)

Thanks SashaGrace for the clarification and quick reply much appreciated and it's good to know there's some light at the end of the tunnel.

  • Any idea of the type of ball park cost to get the unit working?
  • Are there companies in the uk who can make the required changes to the unit?
  • Would it be worth going straight to the MIB2.5 running my existing screen or would I have upgrade the screen to the 9.2" as well which from what I've read would possibly require a kit to fit the 9.2" screen?

Thanks again.

I outsource all radio work to Pawel (pab567 on here) who is from Poland but that's a non issue. His English is excellent and the quality of his work second to none. You would have to get in touch with him for prices as the unit will certainly require extensive hw and sw work to make it to MIB2.5 spec but I have always found him to be very reasonable and able to activate features that other people can't such as the Sport Menu, Media Command and even Skoda Connect if you pay the subscription. I love my 9.2 inch screen and I really recommend going for a newer screen as it lefts the cabin up massively. You can't update to MIB2.5 and keep an 8 inch display. The 9.2 inch display plugs in and works just like the 8 inch one normally would. The part number for the screen in 5E0919606D. I'll get some pics of my setup, or there are a few in my build thread.

I can see why you decided to go for the larger screen definitely tempting, will have to see if the pennies will stretch that far. :)

Thanks again.
